Phase: escalating

The ground cracked open beneath the gate with a thunderous roar, revealing a dark chasm below and a new passage leading deeper into the tower's heart. The air inside the barrier shimmered ominously as Jeane struggled to contain the ancient energies surging around her—she snarled through gritted teeth that she could hold it just a little longer.
"Move!" Merrin shouted, her voice cutting through the rumble of collapsing stone. "Everyone back! Now!"
Varrika spat a curse and grabbed her axe handle, while Halie moved to shield Merrin with her mace at the ready. Seraphine hesitated for only a moment before retreating, her scholar's curiosity warring with survival instinct.
"Jeane," she called out, barely audible over the chaos. "This is too much! Fall back!"
But the succubus sorcerer shook her head stubbornly, crimson eyes fixed on the swirling energies. "Not yet," she growled. "I can... hold it..."
The barrier strained visibly now, magical energies bleeding through in crackling arcs that made Merrin's hair stand on end. The rogue grabbed Jeane's shoulder, trying to pull her away from the gate.
"Jeane!" she shouted. "We have to go! Now!"
The tower groaned around them as more stone gave way, dust and debris raining down from above. A section of wall near the new passage exploded outward with a sound like thunder, revealing yet another chamber beyond.
"Fuck me sideways," Varrika muttered, her hand instinctively moving to her axe hilt. "That can't be good!"
Jeane finally relented, allowing Merrin to drag her back from the gate just as the entire chamber seemed to heave. The barrier spell collapsed with a sound like tearing fabric, magical energies flooding outwards in a wave that made their hair stand on end.
They stumbled backwards into the hallway beyond, the ground still shaking beneath their feet. Behind them, the chamber rumbled and collapsed completely, tons of stone falling into the pit below with an earth-shaking roar.
Jeane gasped for breath, her face pale but triumphant. "I... held it," she panted. "We can... proceed."
Merrin wiped dust from her eyes, looking at the new passage revealed by the collapse. "Proceed where, exactly?" she muttered.
