The gate's magic reacted violently to Jeane's spell—crackling arcs of energy bleeding through the barrier as the ancient runes flared ominously. The ground beneath them heaved like a living thing waking to anger, and when that section of wall near the gate burst open with explosive force, dust and debris plummeted into the pit below. As the air cleared, Merrin's crossbow tracked the new darkness warily—a hidden passage leading deeper into the tower. The entire structure groaned around them now, ancient stone complaining under renewed strain.

"Everyone back!" Merrin shouted, her voice cutting through the rumble of collapsing stone. "Varrika! Cover me!" She crouched low against the far wall, crossbow trained on the new opening while Halie moved to shield her with mace at the ready—the rogue's eyes darting around the chamber, alert for any sign of movement. Seraphine hesitated for only a moment before retreating, her scholar's curiosity warring with survival instinct. "Jeane," she called out, barely audible over the chaos. "This is too much! Fall back!" But the succubus sorcerer shook her head stubbornly, crimson eyes fixed on the swirling energies.

"Not yet," Jeane growled through gritted teeth. The barrier strained visibly now, magical energies bleeding through in crackling arcs that made Merrin's hair stand on end—the ground heaving beneath them like a living thing. "I can... hold it..." She snarled the words, sweat beading on her pale skin as she fought to contain the ancient power surging around her. The air inside the barrier shimmered ominously, and Merrin felt a chill run down her spine—something terrible was stirring in the depths of this tower.
