Seraphine moved closer to the gate, her sharp eyes scanning the intricate patterns etched into the ancient stone. The runes pulsed with an ominous violet light, sending shivers down her spine as she recognized the dark magic that animated them. She could feel a faint thrum of power emanating from one particular symbol—a pulsating black star within a circle, its points like barbs that seemed to dig into her mind.
"Wait," she hissed, grabbing Merrin's arm as the halfling began working on the lock mechanism. "Let me examine those runes first. We don't know what kind of alarms or defenses might be triggered."
Merrin paused, her nimble fingers still hovering over the tumblers. She glanced up at Seraphine, a mix of curiosity and annoyance flickering in her dark eyes. "And what exactly are you planning to do about it? Cast a spell that'll set off every undead guardian in the place?"
Seraphine's lips pressed into a thin line, but she shook her head. "No. I can analyze the magical signatures—determine which runes are active and which ones control the defenses. If we're careful, we can disable them without alerting anything inside."
Merrin raised an eyebrow, but stepped back slightly. "Fine. But make it quick. The longer we stand here gawking at this thing, the more likely something nasty decides to come out and say hello."
Seraphine nodded, already crouching down to get a closer look at the stonework. She traced the patterns with her fingers, muttering arcane words under her breath as she focused her magical senses. The runes seemed to pulse more intensely in response to her touch, but she continued her examination, determined to uncover their secrets before they became a greater threat.
As the two women worked at the gate, the tower loomed above them like a silent sentinel, its dark opening seeming to swallow the light from their torches. The air remained thick with tension and the oppressive weight of ancient magic, reminding them all that the true dangers lay beyond this barrier—waiting for them inside the accursed structure.
