The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I approach the ancient rune-covered gate, my keen eyes tracing the intricate patterns etched into the stone. The air here feels thick with tension and the weight of ancient magic. I can feel a faint thrum of dark energy emanating from one particular symbol—a pulsating black star within a circle, its points like barbs that seem to dig into my mind.
My heart beats a little faster as Merrin begins working on the lock mechanism, her deft fingers manipulating the tumblers. I know we're all tired from the journey, but this feels different—more immediate, more dangerous. The hermit's map suddenly seems woefully inadequate, a child's scrawl compared to the complex web of power before us.
I turn to Jeane, who is casting detection spells around the gate, her brow furrowed in concentration. "Jeane," I call out, my voice low and urgent, "be careful. Whatever's beyond this door knows we're here." My gaze sweeps over the rest of the party—Halie, Varrika, Merrin—and a chill runs down my spine. We need to be more than ready for what comes next.
As I study the runes closer, I notice they twist light rather than reflecting it. It's a subtle effect, but one that speaks volumes about the nature of the magic holding this place shut. "Halie," I say, turning to the cleric, "keep an eye out for any magical traps. If these wards are anything like what we saw on the way here, they won't be easy to spot."
I take a deep breath, steeling myself. The runes seem to pulse with an ominous energy, and I can almost hear their whispers, beckoning us deeper into this cursed tower. This is why we came here, isn't it? To face the impossible? But as I look at my companions, their faces illuminated by torchlight and shadow, I wonder if any of us truly understand what that means.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I take a deep breath, my heart pounding as I approach the ancient rune-covered gate. The intricate patterns etched into the stone seem to dance in the flickering torchlight, each symbol pulsing with an ominous energy. As I step closer, the air feels thick with tension, and a shiver runs down my spine. I can feel the weight of centuries pressing down upon us, the secrets of the tower's dark history threatening to spill out from behind this barrier. But we've come too far to turn back now. The Time-Splitting Sword is within our grasp, and I'll be damned if I let some ancient magic stand in my way. I crouch down beside the lock mechanism, my nimble fingers already working at the tumblers. The others watch with bated breath, their weapons at the ready should anything lurking in the shadows decide to make an appearance. The lock is more complex than any I've encountered before, but I've faced tougher challenges in my travels. With a final twist of my picks, I hear the satisfying click of the mechanism releasing. I glance up at the others, a grim smile spreading across my face. "Looks like we're going in," I say, my voice barely above a whisper. "But be on your guard. We don't know what horrors await us beyond this threshold."

With a deep breath, I grasp the gate's handle and pull it open, the ancient hinges creaking in protest as the barrier to the tower's secrets swings wide.
