Phase: converging

The ground shook as Merrin's crossbow bolt punched through darkness, striking something with a wet thud almost lost in chittering clicks and scuttling movement now filling the air. The ancient runes on the portal flared blue, casting flickering shadows across their faces as Seraphine's eyes tracked the creature's emergence.
"By the gods!" Halie cried out, her voice trembling as the thing lunged forward, its elongated body twisting through gloom. Embers glowed where eyes should have been, fixed unblinkingly on them with a hunger that made Merrin's blood run cold despite iron self-control.
"Forget your gods!" Jeane snarled, drawing upon dark powers within her as bolts of shadowy energy crackled around her fingertips, lancing toward the creature with malevolent precision. The air itself seemed to scream as the magic tore through it, seeking to shred unholy flesh.
Merrin felt the familiar surge of adrenaline, but beneath it ran the cold thread of calculation. Seraphine was right—their best chance lay in her arcane knowledge, not brute force. But first, they needed to survive this immediate threat. He met Varrika's gaze across darkness, seeing the same grim resolve mirrored there.
The rogue nocked another bolt with steady hands, dark eyes scanning shadows for any sign of weakness or opportunity. The creature's hide seemed unnaturally resistant to mundane weapons—his shot had done little more than anger it—but perhaps a well-placed strike could disrupt movements long enough for Seraphine to work her spell.
"Stay close!" he hissed to Halie, positioning himself between the terrified woman and flickering blue portal edge. "We'll hold this thing off while Seraphine works her spell. Don't fire unless you're sure you've got a clean shot—we can't afford to waste bolts."
The sorceress stood deep in concentration, voice rising with arcane syllables that seemed to pull at something ancient and terrible. Merrin felt a surge of relief even as he loosed another bolt into darkness, the projectile streaking through air with deadly accuracy to punch through faceless mouth with wet tearing sound that made Halie whimper behind him.
"Shit!" Merrin hissed, already nocking next shot as he backpedaled frantically. This was going to be close—too close for comfort—but there was no turning back now. They'd committed to this plan, and they'd see it through to bitter end... or die trying.
Creature's elongated form surged into portal's blue light, true horror finally revealed in all its grotesque glory. Dozens of eyeless faces pulsed along flanks, mouths opening and closing in silent screams that sent chills down Merrin's spine despite iron control. This was no mere beast—this was something far worse, something ancient and malevolent that had no place in this world.
But fear could wait. Right now, he needed to focus on immediate threat. The creature was almost upon them now, movements erratic but purposeful as it sought close "
