The ground trembled beneath their feet, a low rumble that seemed to originate from the very foundations of the earth itself. Merrin cursed under her breath, her hand instinctively going to the dagger at her belt as she scanned the shadows for any sign of movement. The ancient stone gate loomed before them, its surface covered in symbols that pulsed with an ominous light, casting long, dancing shadows across the ground.
Jeane felt her stomach twist with dread as she watched the runes flare brighter for a moment before dimming again. She knew they were walking into danger—knew it with every fiber of her being—but there was no turning back now. The entity had made its demands clear: a sacrifice to seal the crossroads, or face its wrath.
Varrika felt the ground shake beneath her boots as some unseen horror approached from the depths of the tower. The stench of decay filled her nostrils, and she tasted fear on her tongue. But she didn't flinch. She'd faced worse in the war—at least, that's what she told herself, even as her heart hammered in her chest.
The darkness beyond the gate seemed to shift in response, as if it was waiting for their decision. A low growl echoed from within, followed by the sound of scuttling footsteps. The air grew thick with the scent of decay, and an unnatural chill settled over them all.
Merrin's quick eyes darted around, searching for any advantage or escape route. But the crumbling walls offered no sanctuary, and the yawning portal provided only one way in—or out. She gritted her teeth, raising her crossbow with steady hands.
"Stay close," she hissed to Halie. "And whatever happens, don't lose your nerve." The halfling scout knew they were all terrified, but fear was a luxury they couldn't afford right now. Only cold calculation and iron will could see them through this ordeal.
The air grew colder still as the entity's presence loomed closer. Jeane felt her magic thrumming beneath her skin, ready to be unleashed—but she knew that such power would be useless against something that had existed since before her kind even walked the earth.
Varrika hefted her crossbow, the familiar weight a comfort in the face of such ancient evil. "We end this now," she growled, her voice barely above a whisper but filled with iron resolve. "For the living—and for those who came before."
The darkness beyond the gate seemed to hold its breath, waiting for their final decision. And as one, the three women stepped forward into the abyss, their hearts pounding in unison as they faced whatever horrors awaited them within the accursed tower.
The ancient symbols on the gate pulsed once more, brighter than ever before, and then faded to darkness as the portal closed behind them with a final, ominous groan.
