As Varrika's finger tightens on the trigger, the air around the party erupts into a cacophony of scuttling footsteps and chitinous clicks, the growl from beyond the portal escalating into a deafening roar. The ancient runes on the gate flare with an intense blue light, casting flickering shadows across the faces of the party members. Merrin's crossbow bolt flies toward the darkness, striking with a loud thud, but the impact is barely audible over the growing din. The ground trembles violently beneath Varrika's feet as another, larger creature lunges from beyond the portal, its twisted, elongated body blurring through the shadows. The creature's eyes glow like embers, fixed on the party with an unblinking hunger. Halie's voice is barely audible above the chaos, "We have to seal it now!"

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

The ancient runes on the gate flare with an intense blue light as Merrin's crossbow bolt flies true, striking the creature with a loud thud. But the impact is barely audible over the growing din of scuttling footsteps and chitinous clicks. The ground trembles violently beneath Varrika's feet as another, larger creature lunges from beyond the portal, its twisted, elongated body blurring through the shadows. Its eyes glow like embers, fixed on the party with an unblinking hunger. Halie's voice is barely audible above the chaos, "We have to seal it now!"
I feel a chill run down my spine as I watch the creature emerge from the darkness. The air crackles with an ancient power that makes my skin prickle with fear. I know we are outmatched, but there is no time for hesitation. My mind races, trying to remember every scrap of knowledge about sealing magical crossroads I ever learned in the archives. "I have an idea!" I shout over the din, my voice strained with urgency. I frantically rummage through my pack, my fingers closing around a small vial of shimmering blue liquid. It's an ingredient for a rare banishing ritual, one that requires immense focus and precision. "This potion... it can disrupt the crossroads long enough for us to seal it properly. But I need time to prepare!"
I drop to my knees, spilling the contents of my pack across the stone floor. Quills, ink bottles, and scrolls of ancient script tumble out as I search for the necessary runes. My heart hammers against my ribs, the creature's growl vibrating through the very foundation of the tower. I have seconds before it reaches us.
"Merrin, Varrika—buy me time! Jeane, I need your magic to amplify mine!" I call out, my hands shaking as I begin to draw the complex pattern on a large sheet of vellum. The lines must be perfect; the slightest error could make the ritual backfire, unleashing something far worse. "Halie, pray for strength! We're going to need every ounce of divine favor we can get!"

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane's crimson eyes blaze with defiance as she faces down the ancient horror that has emerged from the portal. "We don't need your divine favors!" She spits, her voice dripping with disdain. I can handle this abomination myself! Drawing deeply upon the dark energies that course through her veins, Jeane unleashes a torrent of arcane power at the creature. The air crackles with dark magic as bolts of shadowy energy lacerate the air around it, seeking to pierce its unholy flesh.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I feel the ground tremble beneath my feet as the creature emerges from the portal, its twisted form blurring through the shadows. My heart pounds in my chest, adrenaline surging through my veins. But even as fear threatens to overwhelm me, a cold calculation takes hold. Seraphine's plan could work—if we can buy her the time she needs. I catch Varrika's eye, seeing the same grim determination in her gaze that I feel in my own heart. We're outmatched, but we're not helpless. Not yet. I nock another bolt to my crossbow, the familiar weight of the weapon steadying my nerves. "On my mark," I say softly, my voice barely audible over the chaos. "Whatever comes through that gate... we end it. Quickly and permanently."

My finger tightens on the trigger, the familiar pressure a welcome anchor against the rising tide of panic. In the darkness beyond the portal, something stirs, shadows writhing together into vague shapes. I feel a cold satisfaction settle over me. We're not alone in this fight. But as the entity's presence grows stronger, a flicker of doubt creeps into my mind. What if Halie is right? What if we're making a terrible mistake by unleashing this darkness? I push the thought aside. We can't afford to second-guess ourselves now. Whatever happens next... we'll see it through to the end. I glance at Jeane, meeting her fiery gaze with a nod of understanding. "Ready," I say softly, my voice barely audible over the rumbling from beyond the gate. The darkness seems to pulse in response, as if sensing our determination. And in that moment, I know we're on the edge of something terrible... and possibly glorious. "Three," Varrika's deep voice counts out, "two... one..."

I take a final breath, my finger tightening on the trigger. Whatever comes next... we face it together. "Fire!"
