The ground shuddered violently as Merrin's crossbow bolt found its mark, but the impact was quickly swallowed by the rising tide of sound—the cacophony of countless scuttling feet and chitinous clicks that filled the air around them. The ancient runes on the portal flared with an intense blue light, casting flickering shadows across their terrified faces as Seraphine's eyes tracked the creature's emergence.

"By the gods!" Halie cried out, her voice trembling as the thing lunged forward, its elongated body twisting through gloom. Embers glowed where eyes should have been, fixed unblinkingly on them with a hunger that made Merrin's blood run cold despite iron self-control. "Forget your gods!" Jeane snarled, drawing upon dark powers within her as bolts of shadowy energy crackled around her fingertips, lancing toward the creature with malevolent precision. The air itself seemed to scream as the magic tore through it, seeking to shred unholy flesh.

Merrin felt the familiar surge of adrenaline, but beneath it ran the cold thread of calculation. Seraphine was right—their best chance lay in her arcane knowledge, not brute force. But first, they needed to survive this imminent threat. The creature's hide seemed impervious to conventional weapons; its wounds closed almost instantly, leaving only faint scars that quickly faded.

"Listen to me!" Seraphine shouted over the din, her voice barely carrying through the cacophony but somehow cutting through the terror. "This thing... it's ancient! Older than the tower itself, perhaps even older than the woods! We can't fight it head-on—we need to outsmart it!"

Jeane's shadow-bolts scored hits, leaving smoking wounds that healed almost as quickly as they appeared. The creature's chittering laughter echoed around them, seeming to come from everywhere at once. "Outsmart it?" Jeane growled, her wings flaring in agitation. "How do we outsmart something that can't die?"

Halie dropped to her knees, hands clasped together as she began to pray fervently for divine guidance. The ancient symbols on the gate pulsed with malevolent energy, each beat seeming to pull them closer to whatever horror lay beyond. "We can't let this darkness through!" she shouted over the din. "Varrika, Merrin—you have to buy Seraphine time! She's our only hope!"

Merrin's crossbow fired again, the bolt punching through one of the creature's many eyes with a wet thud. The thing shrieked, a sound like nails on slate that made the very stones of the tower vibrate. But even as they watched, the wound began to close, the ember-like eye reforming before their eyes.

"Enough of this!" Jeane hissed, her patience snapping. "You want a sacrifice? Then take ME!" With a swift, decisive motion, she slammed her palm against the ancient rune covering the gate. The symbols flared with blinding light before cracking and shattering like glass.

The creature recoiled as the portal sealed itself shut, its form dissolving into wisps of shadow that were quickly consumed by the darkness beyond the gate. Silence descended once more, broken only by the sound of their own ragged breathing.

Seraphine stared at the now-closed gate, her heart hammering against her ribs. The air felt suddenly heavy, thick with the weight of what had just happened. Jeane... she'd actually done it. Sacrificed herself to close the portal and save them all from that ancient horror. A sharp, hot pain lanced through Seraphine's chest at the thought.

"No," she whispered, the word lost in the sudden silence. She turned to face the others, her expression a mixture of shock and dawning realization. She did it. She actually did it...
