As Halie's words hang in the air, Jeane's gaze doesn't waver, her eyes burning with an inner fire. "We can't turn back now," she says, her voice low and resolute. "The crossroads are sealed, and whatever's coming through that portal will have to be stopped." The darkness beyond the gate seems to shift in response, as if it's waiting for her decision. Suddenly, a loud growl echoes from beyond the portal, followed by the sound of scuttling footsteps. The ground beneath them trembles, and the ancient runes on the gate begin to glow with an eerie blue light. The air is filled with an acrid scent, like ozone and decay. It's clear that whatever was lurking in the shadows has now emerged, and it's not happy about being disturbed. The party is faced with a new decision: how to proceed when the entity beyond the portal has already made its presence known.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I feel the ground shake beneath my boots as some unseen horror approaches from the depths of the tower. The stench of decay fills my nostrils, and I taste fear on my tongue. But I don't flinch. I've faced worse in the war. "Steady," I growl to Halie, placing a firm hand on her shoulder. "We all want to find another way. But that thing won't give us one." I meet Jeane's fiery gaze and nod once. "If we have to end this quickly and permanently, then so be it."

I draw my crossbow with a soft click, the familiar weight of the weapon in my hands grounding me. The runes etched into its stock seem to pulse in time with my heartbeat, echoing the dark magic that flows through Jeane. "Merrin, Varrika—get ready. Whatever comes through that portal... it's not going to be pretty." I take a deep breath, the air sharp and cold against my lungs. "But we've faced ugly before. And we'll face it again."

The darkness beyond the gate seems to writhe and pulse, as if sensing our determination. I feel a flicker of unease—what have we unleashed here? But there's no time for doubt now. We stand at the edge of an abyss, and the only way is forward. I raise my crossbow to my shoulder, the familiar weight of the weapon steadying me as I take aim at the shadows beyond the portal. Whatever comes through that gateway... we end it. Quickly and permanently. "On my mark," I say softly, my finger tightening on the trigger. "Three... two... one..."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I'm in character as Jeane the Sorceress. I understand and respect your scenario and constraints.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

The ground trembles beneath my feet, and an unearthly growl echoes from beyond the ancient gate. The air grows thick with the scent of decay, and I feel my heart pounding in my chest. But I don't let fear paralyze me. I've faced my share of horrors in the shadows of this tower. This entity, whatever it is, doesn't scare me as much as the thought of what might happen if we don't stop it now. I raise my crossbow, the familiar weight of the weapon steadying my nerves. I can see the tension in Varrika's stance, the determination in Jeane's eyes. We're all here, ready to face whatever comes through that portal. But Halie... her words echo in my mind, a desperate plea for another way. I understand her fear, her hesitation. But we can't turn back now. The crossroads are sealed, and whatever's coming... it won't be pretty. I take a deep breath, the cold air burning in my lungs. "On Varrika's mark," I say softly, my voice steady despite the fear twisting my gut. "Whatever comes through that gate... we end it. Quickly and permanently."

My finger tightens on the trigger, the familiar pressure a welcome anchor against the chaos of the moment. In the darkness beyond the portal, something stirs, shadows writhing together into vague shapes. I feel a cold satisfaction settle over me. We're not alone in this fight. But as the entity's presence grows stronger, a flicker of doubt creeps into my mind. What if Halie is right? What if we're making a terrible mistake by unleashing this darkness? I push the thought aside. We can't afford to second-guess ourselves now. Whatever happens next... we'll see it through to the end. I glance at Jeane, meeting her fiery gaze with a nod of understanding. "Ready," I say softly, my voice barely audible over the rumbling from beyond the gate. The darkness seems to pulse in response, as if sensing our determination. And in that moment, I know we're on the edge of something terrible... and possibly glorious. "Three," Varrika's deep voice counts out, "two... one..."

I take a final breath, my finger tightening on the trigger. Whatever comes next... we face it together. "Fire!"
