The ancient stone gate groaned wider with each passing second, its runes pulsing with an ominous light that cast long shadows across the ground. The darkness beyond beckoned like a gaping maw, promising unknown horrors within. Jeane felt her stomach twist with dread as she faced the reality of their situation—the entity demanded sacrifice to seal the crossroads, and time was running out.

Merrin's voice cut through the heavy silence, sharp and calculating despite the fear evident in her eyes. "You can't be serious," the halfling scout hissed, her gaze darting between Jeane and the yawning darkness beyond the gate. "We're not talking about a few gold pieces here—this thing wants us to offer up one of our own!" Her hand instinctively went to the dagger at her belt, fingers curling around the hilt as if it could protect them from such ancient evil.

Halie took a step forward, her voice trembling but firm. "Wait." The weary cleric's blue-grey eyes locked onto Jeane's crimson ones, a desperate plea evident in their depths. "Please—there has to be another way. Think of what you're asking us to do!" The silver cross at her throat glinted weakly in the dim light as she shook her head vehemently. "I can't let you do this... not like this."

Jeane's expression hardened, the runes across her skin flaring brighter for a moment before subsiding. She opened her mouth to respond when a low growl echoed from the depths of the tower—a sound that seemed to vibrate through the very stone around them. The three women froze, their attention snapping towards the darkness beyond the gate. Something was approaching.

The ancient magic pressing in from all sides felt alive now, hungry and predatory in its intensity. Merrin's grip on her dagger tightened as she whispered, "Shit..." Her keen eyes scanned the shadows for any sign of movement while her mind raced through possible escape routes—none of which seemed particularly appealing when facing down an unknown ancient horror.

Halie clutched her holy symbol tighter, the cold metal pressing into her palm as panic threatened to overwhelm her. The dark magic swirling around them was unlike anything she'd ever encountered—it felt almost sentient, its malevolent presence seeming to feed on their fear. Every instinct screamed at her to run, but the thought of abandoning Merrin or Jeane to this darkness alone was unthinkable.

Jeane's hand moved to the hilt of her heavy mace, her expression a mix of determination and barely suppressed terror. The entity had made its demands clear: sacrifice one of them to seal the crossroads, or face whatever ancient horrors lay beyond that gate. And now, it seemed, they were out of time to debate the matter further.

The growling from within the tower grew louder, more insistent—a low rumble that seemed to shake the very air around them. Something was coming, and it was coming fast. The three women exchanged tense glances, silently acknowledging that their options had just narrowed dramatically. Whatever ancient evil awaited them beyond that gate, they'd have to face it together—or not at all.

In the oppressive silence before the inevitable confrontation, Merrin's voice cut through the tension once more, sharp and practical despite the fear evident in her eyes. "Alright then," she said, her gaze fixed on the darkness ahead. "If we're doing this, we do it smart. Halie, stay behind us—your healing magic might be our best defense against whatever's in there." She turned to Jeane next, her expression a mix of concern and grudging respect for the sorcerer's fierce determination. "And you..." The halfling paused, choosing her words carefully. "...try not to get us all killed with your usual brand of 'creative problem-solving,' yeah?"

Jeane managed a tight smile despite the terror coiling in her gut. "Wouldn't dream of it," she replied, though her voice carried none of its usual bravado. The runes across her skin pulsed ominously as she<|im_start|>
