The runes flare as she pushes back, arcane energy crackling along her wings. "I can feel it—the hunger behind those symbols, the intelligence testing us. This isn't just a ward—it's a predator trying to decide which of us looks tastiest." The mist swirls ominously around Merrin, coalescing into grasping tendrils that reach out as if beckoning her closer. "Turn back... while you still can..." the ancient voice hisses through the air.

Varrika hefts her mace, the familiar weight a comforting anchor in the face of the tower's creeping dread. "Don't let those tendrils touch you," she calls out, her voice gruff with warning. The whispering grows louder, echoing through the air like a dark promise. "Whatever's in there doesn't want to help us—it wants to pull us in." She knows better than to trust anything this tower says; its magic feels actively hostile to her dwarf nature.*

Merrin's eyes narrow as she watches the mist tendrils writhe around her legs, a cold chill running down her spine. "Fine," she mutters, drawing her dagger and slicing through one of the grasping appendages with a swift, precise motion. The mist recoils briefly before reforming, the voice hissing again in warning. "Foolish mortals... you cannot escape your fate..."She grins defiantly at the gate. "Heroes or fools, eh? Guess we'll find out soon enough."

Halie clutches her holy symbol tighter, the silver metal cold against her palm as she watches Merrin's reckless display. "Merrin!" she hisses, fear and admiration warring in her voice. "What are you doing?"The cleric takes a step back instinctively, her eyes fixed on the writhing mist and the ominous gate beyond. "We should be careful—this feels wrong. That thing..."She trails off, unable to find the words to express the creeping dread that fills her.

Jeane's wings unfurl slightly, a show of barely-contained power as she steps closer to the gate. The runes pulse with dark energy, each symbol seeming to watch her as she approaches. "This isn't just a warning," she says, her voice carrying an edge that cuts through the oppressive atmosphere. "It's testing us—seeing if we have the strength to push past fear itself." The tendrils of mist reach out towards Merrin again, and Jeane raises her hand, arcane energy...*

Suddenly, a low growl echoes from beyond the gate, the sound of something large and hungry approaching. The runes flare brighter, the voice hissing in triumphant malice. "Too late to turn back now—it's time for the real test!"The mist thickens around them all, tendrils reaching out hungrily as the ancient magic prepares to consume its prey.*

The party freezes, tension crackling through the air like lightning before a storm. They've pushed too far—the tower's defenses are no longer just warnings, but active threats. The growl grows louder, closer, and they realize with dawning horror that whatever lies beyond the gate isn't just magical wards anymore—it's something far worse.*

Jeane's eyes widen in realization. "Everyone back!" she snaps, her voice sharp with urgency. "That wasn't part of the ward—something else is coming through!"*

The tendrils of mist coil tighter around Merrin's legs, and she feels a cold grip on her ankle. "Shit!" She tries to yank free, but the magic holds fast, dragging her inexorably towards the gate.

Varrika raises her mace, ready to strike at anything that threatens her friends. "Merrin!" *she shouts, moving forward to help.**

Halie clutches her holy symbol tighter, praying for guidance and protection. "Goddess, grant us your strength!" she cries out, her voice shaking with fear but filled with desperate faith.

The growl echoes again, closer now—a deep, rumbling sound that vibrates through the ground itself. The gate begins to shift, ancient stones grinding against each other as something massive pushes from within. The runes flare blindingly bright, and the voice screams in triumphant malice. "THE HUNGER BEGS TO FEED—AND YOU WILL SERVE!"

Jeane's eyes lock onto the shifting gate, her mind racing through spells and strategies. This is beyond what she expected—something ancient and powerful is breaking free. "Everyone spread out!" she shouts, already beginning to weave a complex arcane gesture.* "We need to contain whatever's coming through!"

The mist tightens around Merrin, pulling her closer to the gate as she struggles against its grip. "Help me!" she yells, her dagger slashing at the tendrils with little effect.

Varrika charges forward, her mace raised high. "Let go of my friend, you ancient bastard!" *She brings the weapon down hard on one of the tendrils, the impact sending a shockwave of force through the magical bonds.**

Halie stumbles back, her eyes wide with terror as she sees the gate beginning to open. "This is madness!" she screams, fumbling for her holy symbol and preparing to channel divine energy. "We should never have come here!"

The grinding sound intensifies, stones cracking and shifting as whatever lies beyond begins to force its way through. The air grows colder, and a foul stench wafts out from the crack in the gate—a smell of decay and ancient hunger. Jeane's arcane energy flares brighter, her wings spreading wide as she prepares to unleash a powerful spell. "Everyone ready?" she calls out, her voice tight with concentration. "This is going to be bad—we need to work together or we're all done for!"

Merrin manages to slash through one of the tendrils holding her, freeing her leg momentarily. "Got you!" she snarls, but before she can pull away, more tendrils grab at her other leg and arm. "Damn it!"

Varrika brings her mace down again and again, each blow striking true but seeming to have little effect on the swirling mist. "This thing doesn't feel like anything solid!" she shouts in frustration.

Halie raises her holy symbol high, channeling divine energy into a burst of pure light. "Be gone, foul spirit!" *she cries out, the radiant energy washing over Merrin and momentarily dissipating the tendrils around her.**

Jeane completes her spell gesture, arcane power crackling around her like a cage of lightning. "Everyone get behind me!" she shouts, stepping forward to face whatever is about to emerge from the gate. The air crackles with raw magical energy as she prepares to unleash a devastating blast—hopefully powerful enough to at least slow down whatever ancient horror is breaking free.*

The growling intensifies to a roar as something massive begins to push through the widening gap in the gate. Stone shatters and metal groans under immense pressure, and then—a clawed hand, covered in decaying flesh, reaches out into their world. The voice screams again, triumphant and hungry. "THE HUNGER WAITS NO MORE—FEED ME YOUR SOULS!"

Time seems to slow as the party realizes the true horror of their situation. They've awakened something ancient and terrible—a creature of pure hunger and malice that has been waiting for prey like them. Jeane's spell explodes outward, a wave of arcane force slamming into the emerging monstrosity with enough power to stagger even an ancient abomination.*

But it's not enough. The thing keeps coming, its body slowly oozing through the gate like decaying flesh through a sieve. Eyes that burn with malevolent hunger fix on them one by one, and the party realizes with dawning horror that they've unleashed something far beyond their ability to handle.

This is it—the moment of truth. Will their combined skills, courage, and desperation be enough to survive the ancient evil they've released? Or will they become just another meal for the thing that hungers in the darkness?
