Phase: escalating

Varrika hefted her mace, the familiar weight a comforting anchor in the face of the tower's creeping dread. "Don't let those tendrils touch you," she called out, her voice gruff with warning. The mist swirled ominously around Merrin, coalescing into grasping tendrils that reached out as if beckoning her closer. The whispering grew louder, echoing through the air like a dark promise.* "Whatever's in there doesn't want to help us—it wants to pull us in," Varrika muttered, more to herself than anyone else. She knew better than to trust anything this tower said; its magic felt actively hostile to her dwarf nature.
Jeane stepped closer to the gate, her wings unfurling slightly in a show of barely-contained power. The runes pulsed with dark energy, each symbol seeming to watch her as she approached. "This isn't just a warning," she said, her voice carrying an edge that cut through the oppressive atmosphere. "It's testing us—seeing if we have the strength to push past fear itself." The tendrils of mist reached out towards Merrin again, and Jeane raised her hand, arcane energy crackling between her fingers.* "Merrin, don't move! Whatever it wants from you, giving in now will only make things worse."
Halie fell back half a step from the mist that clung to Merrin, her hand instinctively moving to grasp the silver cross hanging at her throat. "Whatever this is—this thing trying to grab her feet—it feels wrong. Wronger than the rest of this cursed place, which is saying something," she said, her voice tight with apprehension. The runes pulsed with an almost mocking rhythm as she spoke, and she grit her teeth against their insidious effect.* "Jeane's right about one thing—I can feel it too. Whatever's beyond that gate isn't just watching...
Merrin stood frozen, the tendrils of mist curling around her ankles now. The whispering voices grew clearer, their words carrying a seductive promise of power and knowledge beyond imagining. No, she thought fiercely, fighting the urge to step forward into the darkness. I won't fall for this.*
