Phase: converging

The ancient stones groan as the tower's main gate swings open, revealing a corridor that stretches into darkness beyond. The air inside is thick with dust and something else—an old magic that makes the hair on the back of Merrin's neck stand up. She pauses at the threshold, her hand instinctively going to the dagger at her belt.
Seraphine steps forward, her staff held ready, eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of movement. "Stay close," she warns, her voice barely above a whisper. "Whatever opened this gate, it wasn't friendly." The runes on the walls seem to pulse in response to their presence, their light casting eerie patterns across the stone.
Jeane follows, her wings tucked tight against her back, eyes darting from side to side. She can feel the magic in the air, thick and alive, pressing against her skin like a physical weight. "This place is... wrong," she mutters, more to herself than anyone else. "The magic here isn't natural."
Merrin takes another step forward, into the corridor proper. The stone underfoot is slick with dust and something that might be ancient water damage. She crouches for a moment, examining the floor. "Footprints," she announces, standing up again. "Fresh ones. Someone's been through here recently." Her eyes meet Seraphine's across the gloom. "Or something has."
Seraphine nods grimly. "Then we proceed with caution. Stay together, stay alert." She moves forward, her staff held ready, the magical symbols on its surface glowing faintly in response to the ambient magic of the tower. The corridor stretches ahead, twisting out of sight into deeper darkness.
Jeane falls back slightly, letting Seraphine and Merrin take point. Her eyes are fixed on the walls, searching for any sign of movement or hidden dangers. The magic here is unlike anything she's encountered before—old, powerful, and deeply unsettling in its intensity.
Merrin leads the way, her rogue's instincts guiding her through the gloom. Every step echoes softly in the narrow space, the sound seeming to fade into the stone itself rather than reverberating normally. She pauses at a junction where two corridors meet, one leading steeply downwards, the other continuing at a more gentle slope.
"Down or straight?" she asks, glancing back at Seraphine for guidance. The air in both directions feels heavy with promise of discovery—and danger.
Seraphine approaches, her expression grave as she studies the options. "Let's take the steeper path," she decides after a moment. "If this tower is anything like the legends suggest, the deeper levels will hold the greatest power—and the greatest risks." She moves to examine the downward-leading corridor more closely, her staff held out before her like a divining rod.
Jeane follows, her wings half-spread for balance as they descend into the deeper darkness. The air grows colder, heavier, and something shifts in the ambient magic—a subtle change that makes her skin crawl. "I don't like this," she mutters, more to herself than anyone else. "The magic is... changing."
Merrin nods, her hand never leaving the hilt of her dagger. "Yeah, I feel it too." She moves forward cautiously, eyes scanning every inch of the corridor for signs of trap or ambush. The stone underfoot becomes slicker here, coated with some kind of slimy residue that makes each step treacherous.
Seraphine raises a hand, signaling them to stop. Her staff's symbols are pulsing more rapidly now, casting flickering shadows on the walls around them. "There's something ahead," she hums, barely audible in the oppressive silence. "Something powerful. I can feel it."
Jeane steps closer to Seraphine, her own magic coiling defensively around her. "What kind of power?" she asks, her voice tight with tension.
Seraphine closes her eyes for a moment, focusing her senses. When she opens them again, there's a new resolve in her expression. "Life and death," she says softly. "Bound together in ways that shouldn't be possible." She looks at Merrin. "Whatever's ahead, it's ancient—and it's dangerous."
Merrin meets Seraphine's gaze, then nods slowly. "Then we proceed with extreme caution," she agrees. "Let me scout ahead—if there's a trap, I'd rather set it off than lead us all into one." She moves forward, her footsteps nearly silent on the slick stone.
Jeane watches Merrin disappear into the darkness, then turns to Seraphine. "What did you mean by 'bound together'?" she asks, her voice low and intense.
Seraphine's expression is grim as she begins to explain. "The magic here... it's not just about death or decay. It's about the cycle of life itself—birth, growth, death, and then... something else." She shakes her head. "I've never encountered anything like it before. Whatever created this place, whatever's waiting for us ahead... it's beyond anything I've studied."
Jeane is silent for a long moment, processing Seraphine's words. Then she nods slowly. "Then we face it together," she says firmly. "Whatever it is, whatever it wants—we're stronger than any ancient magic." She extends her hand to Seraphine, offering support and solidarity.
Seraphine takes Jeane's hand, squeezing it briefly before releasing it. Together, they move forward into the darkness, following Merrin's trail deeper into the heart of the ancient tower.
