Phase: escalating

Merrin lowered Varikka to a sitting position against the wall, her own legs shaking from the exertion of carrying the dwarf's weight for so long. The sound of rushing water filled the air, growing louder with each passing second. She clutched the glowing shard tighter, its light casting eerie shadows across the cramped crevice walls. "We need to move," she hissed, her voice barely audible over the roar. "Quickly!" She shifted Varikka's weight more securely across her shoulders, ignoring the protests from her own aching muscles. The fireman's carry was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain, but there was no other choice.
As Merrin stumbled forward into the darkness, she could feel the cold stone floor vibrate beneath her feet. The sound of collapsing rock and rushing water filled her ears, and she knew they were running out of time. "Varikka," she called out, her voice strained with effort. "Stay conscious. We're almost there." She could feel the weight of her friend pressing down on her shoulders, a constant reminder of their precarious situation.
Suddenly, the ground gave way beneath them once again, and Merrin felt herself stumble forward. She managed to keep her footing, but the near-fall sent a jolt of pain through her injured ankle. "Fuck!" she yelped, her grip on Varrika tightening instinctively. "Hold on tight!"
Varikka wrapped her arms around Merrin's neck, her face pressed against the halfling's shoulder. The movement sent fresh agony shooting up her leg, but she bit back a cry of pain, not wanting to distract her friend. "I've got you," she managed, her voice muffled by Merrin's cloak.
They staggered onward, the sound of water growing ever louder. Finally, they emerged into a larger chamber, the source of the rushing sound becoming clear - a narrow channel of water was cutting through the floor, flowing rapidly towards them. "Shit," Merrin breathed, her eyes wide with alarm. "We need to get out of here before we're washed away!"
Varikka nodded grimly, already scanning the chamber for an escape route. Her gaze landed on a narrow staircase carved into the far wall, leading upwards. "There!" she pointed. "The stairs - if we can make it up there, we'll be safe from the flood."
Merrin followed Varrika's pointing finger, her heart sinking as she saw how precarious the climb looked. The steps were narrow and crumbling, barely wide enough for a halfling to navigate, let alone a dwarf with a sprained ankle. "That looks... challenging," she said, her voice tight with anxiety.
Before they could debate further, a fresh rumble echoed through the chamber. They whirled around to see a section of the ceiling collapsing, sending a cascade of rocks and debris tumbling down towards them. "Move!" Varikka shouted, pushing herself to her feet despite the pain in her ankle.
