The sound of rushing water filled the air, growing louder with each passing second. Merrin clutched the glowing shard tighter, its light casting eerie shadows across the cramped crevice walls. "We need to move," she hissed, her voice barely audible over the roar. "Quickly!" She shifted Varikka's weight more securely across her shoulders, ignoring the protests from her own aching muscles. The fireman's carry was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain, but there was no other choice.

As Merrin stumbled forward into the darkness, she could feel the cold stone floor vibrate beneath her feet. The sound of collapsing rock and rushing water filled her ears, and she knew they were running out of time. "Varikka," she called out, her voice strained with effort. "Stay conscious. We're almost there." She could feel the weight of her friend pressing down on her shoulders, a constant reminder of their precarious situation.

Suddenly, the ground gave way beneath them once again, and Merrin felt herself stumble forward. She managed to keep her footing, but the near-fall sent a jolt of adrenaline through her system. "Shit," she muttered under her breath, her grip on Varikka tightening instinctively. "We need to find solid ground before we both collapse from exhaustion or something worse happens." She could hear The Guardian's pursuit growing louder, and she knew they couldn't afford to slow down.

As they pressed onward through the unstable tunnels, Merrin found herself growing increasingly anxious about Varikka's condition. Her friend's injured ankle made every step a struggle, and Merrin could feel the weight of responsibility settling heavily on her shoulders. "We're almost there," she repeated, more for her own benefit than Varikka's. "Just a little further." But as the water continued to rise around them, she began to wonder if they would make it out alive.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity of stumbling through darkness and debris, Merrin spotted a small opening in the tunnel wall ahead. With a surge of hope, she quickened her pace, her muscles burning with exertion. "There!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with relief. "I think I see an exit." She could feel Varikka's weight shift as her friend tried to look ahead, but Merrin urged her to keep her head down and focus on moving forward.

As they approached the opening, Merrin realized it was actually a narrow crevice in the wall, barely wide enough for them to squeeze through. "This is going to be tight," she warned, pausing to assess the situation. "But it's our best shot at staying alive." She took a deep breath and began to maneuver Varikka through the opening, inch by painful inch.

Once they were both safely inside the crevice, Merrin allowed herself a moment of relief. The sound of rushing water was still audible, but they had managed to escape the immediate threat of drowning. "We made it," she panted, her body trembling with exhaustion. "Now we just need to find a way out of here before The Guardian catches up with us." She looked around the cramped space, trying to make out any details in the dim light provided by the glowing shard.
