Round 799 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As we navigate the narrow crevice, a loud rumble shakes the ground beneath us, and a chunk of the tunnel wall collapses, sending rocks and debris crashing to the floor. The Guardian's pursuit grows louder, echoing off the rubble-strewn tunnel. "Stay close!" I warn, my hand on Varikka's arm as we move forward. She grits her teeth, her injured ankle screaming in protest. The crevice opens up into a larger chamber, and for a moment, we catch our breath. But then, we hear the sound of rushing water growing louder. The structural collapse has triggered a flood, and the water is rising fast. We have to keep moving - but which path should we take? The map suggests a stairway to the left, but it looks unstable, and we can see The Guardian emerging from the rubble to our right, her eyes fixed on us with an unnerving intensity.
I feel my heart pounding as I hear the sound of rushing water growing louder.
I glance at Varikka, my brow furrowed in concern. "Can you make it up the stairs?" I ask, my voice tight with urgency. "They look treacherous, but it might be our only chance."
I turn to face The Guardian, my hand gripping tightly onto my mace as I ready myself for a fight. "Stay behind me," I warn Varikka, my eyes fixed on the approaching threat. "I'll hold her off as long as I can."
But even as I speak, I know that we're running out of time. The water is rising fast, and the stairway looks like it could collapse at any moment. We have to make a decision - and quickly.
I take a deep breath, my mind racing as I try to think of a way out. "We can't stay here," I mutter, more to myself than to Varikka. "But which way do we go?"
I glance back at the map, my eyes scanning the faded lines and markings, looking for any sign of a safe path forward. But there's nothing - just the same treacherous tunnels and unstable stairways that have plagued us since we first entered this damned place.
And as The Guardian draws closer, her eyes locked on ours with an unnerving intensity, I know that we're running out of time. We have to make a choice - and quickly.
I grit my teeth, pain lancing through my ankle with each step, but I know we can't afford to slow down. "The stairs," I grunt, pointing with my chin towards the treacherous climb ahead. "It's our best chance."
I can feel the cold water lapping at my boots, rising fast as the floodwaters fill the chamber. The Guardian is closing in, her unnatural grace making the rubble-strewn floor no obstacle to her pursuit.
My hand tightens on my mace, knuckles white with the strain. "I'll go first," I say, my voice hard and determined. "If the stairs hold, I can help pull you up. If they collapse, at least I'll be the one to fall."
I don't wait for Merrin's reply. With a grunt of effort, I start to climb, testing each step before committing my weight. The stones are slick with moisture, and the air is thick with the musty scent of ancient stone and decay.
Halfway up, a chunk of masonry crumbles beneath my foot, sending me stumbling forward. My injured ankle buckles, and I let out a cry of pain as I barely catch myself on the stair above. "Damn it all," I mutter, my breath coming in ragged gasps.
But there's no time to rest. The water is rising fast, and The Guardian is gaining ground with every passing second. With a final burst of effort, I heave myself up onto the landing at the top of the stairs, my arms shaking from the strain.
I turn back to face Merrin, my eyes wide with urgency. "Come on!" I shout, reaching a hand down to her. "We can't afford to wait!"
And as I watch her struggle up the final few steps, I know that we're far from safe. But for now, we've bought ourselves a little more time - and in this place, that might just be enough.
