The stone chute opens up into a vast cavern, the air suddenly clear of the clinging fog. Merrin can see the ground rushing up to meet them, a wide river flowing through the center of the chamber. "Varrika!" she screams again, her voice filled with terror as she realizes their predicament. "We're going to hit water!" With a bone-jarring impact, they both plunge into the icy river, the force of the fall driving them deep beneath the surface. Merrin fights her way back up, gasping for air as she breaks through the churning waters. She looks around frantically, spotting Varikka...
