Phase: escalating

Merrin grits her teeth as she slides down the slick stone chute, her hands scrabbling for any purchase amid the swirling fog. The air rushes past her ears in a deafening roar, and she can feel Varikka's weight against her back as they plummet downward. "Varrika!" she shouts over the din, trying to spot her friend through the thick mist. "Are you alright?" Her heart pounds in her chest as they twist and turn down the narrowing passage, the stone walls closing in around them like a closing fist.
Below them, the chute opens up into a vast cavern, the air suddenly clear of the clinging fog. Merrin can see the ground rushing up to meet them, a wide river flowing through the center of the chamber. "Varrika!" she screams again, her voice filled with terror as she realizes their predicament. "We're going to hit water!"
With a bone-jarring impact, they both plunge into the icy river, the force of the fall driving them deep beneath the surface. Merrin fights her way back up, gasping for air as she breaks through the churning waters. She looks around frantically, spotting Varrika struggling to stay afloat nearby. "Varikka!" she shouts, swimming towards her friend with powerful strokes. "Grab onto me!"
Varrika's face emerges from the water, her expression a mix of pain and determination as she treads water with her good leg. She reaches out for Merrin's offered hand, their fingers brushing before the current pulls them apart once more. "I'm okay," she gasps, her voice strained but steady. "But my ankle... it's not going to hold up in this current."
Merrin nods grimly, her mind racing as she tries to assess their situation. The river flows swiftly through the cavern, its banks lined with jagged rocks and twisted roots. She can see a narrow ledge running along one side, barely wide enough for them both. "There!" she points, swimming towards it with renewed vigor. "We need to get out of this current!"
With herculean effort, Merrin manages to haul herself onto the ledge, turning back to help Varrika. The dwarf woman grits her teeth in pain as she pulls herself up using Merrin's outstretched hand, her injured ankle dragging uselessly behind her. "Thanks," she pants, collapsing against the stone wall. "I owe you one."
Merrin nods, her chest heaving as she catches her breath. She looks around the cavern, noting the faint glow of the Guardian's eyes still visible in the distance above them. "We need to keep moving," she says, helping Varrika to her feet. "That thing is still after us, and I don't fancy being caught in this river again."
Varrika grimaces as she puts weight on her injured ankle, but nods determinedly. "Agreed. Let's find a way out of here before we freeze to death or that... thing... catches up with us."
