The water wasn't just rising; it was alive somehow, each wave carrying a low groan that seemed to come from the stone itself. Merrin felt her stomach drop as she watched the surface ripple and churn below them, the bioluminescent streaks of their pursuer still visible in the depths. The ledge ahead stretched into darkness, offering no clear path forward or back.

Varikka's hand trembled in hers, cold despite the rising water already lapping at their knees. "Merrin," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the growing rumble of shifting stone. "What is this place?"

Merrin shook her head, not taking her eyes off the water. "I don't know. But we can't stay here." She tugged gently on Varikka's hand, leading them further along the crumbling edge. Every step felt like walking on thin ice over a chasm - one wrong move and they'd plunge into that waiting darkness below.

The water was up to their thighs now, cold enough to make Merrin's teeth chatter despite her best efforts at control. She could feel Varikka shivering against her side, the younger woman's grip tightening as another wave hit them from behind. They needed to find higher ground fast, or the rising water would trap them completely.

"Keep moving," she urged, more for herself than Varikka. The ledge narrowed ahead, disappearing into shadows that seemed to swallow what little light remained. But it was their only option - go forward or risk being swept back into whatever horrors lay behind them. Merrin took another step, the water pulling at her legs like grasping hands, and prayed they could find a way out of this cursed tower before it collapsed entirely around them.
