The water lapped at their feet with each surge, a constant reminder of how precarious their situation truly was. Merrin moved with practiced ease along the narrow ledge, her small stature and agility working in their favor as she navigated the treacherous path. But every movement sent fresh pain shooting through her injured leg, a constant reminder of the fight that had brought them to this desperate predicament.

Varikka clung tightly to Merrin’s back, her entire body trembling with fear as she followed the rogue’s lead up onto solid ground once more. The younger woman slid off, turning to face Merrin with an expression that was equal parts relief and concern.

“You okay?” Merrin asked, her voice tight with urgency.

Varikka nodded, though her teeth were still chattering. “I-I think so. What now?”

Merrin’s eyes scanned their surroundings, taking in every detail of their new vantage point. The ledge continued along the wall, disappearing into darkness both ahead and behind them. Below, the water churned ominously, the creature’s bioluminescent markings still visible as it circled the depths like a predator stalking its prey.

“We keep moving,” Merrin said finally, her voice firm despite the exhaustion weighing heavy on her limbs. “There has to be another way out of this maze. We just need to find it before this whole place comes crashing down around us.”

Varikka nodded again, drawing strength from Merrin’s unwavering determination. Together, they turned to face whatever challenges awaited them on the narrow ledge above the watery abyss—two women bound by friendship and the desperate need for survival against all odds.

The structure groaned once more, a fresh cascade of dust and debris tumbling down around them. It was a reminder that time was running out—a countdown to potential disaster that added an extra layer of urgency to their already perilous journey. But Merrin refused to let fear win. She had Varikka to protect, and she’d be damned if she let either of them die in this godforsaken place.

With renewed resolve, she took the first step onto the ledge, her hand outstretched to guide Varikka behind her. The path ahead was uncertain, but one thing was clear: they wouldn’t face whatever lay beyond alone.
