The ground beneath her feet gave a loud, ominous groan that seemed to echo through the very stone. Merrin felt it shift, the vibration running up her legs as she stood frozen in the narrow passage entrance. The water wasn't just rising anymore—it was surging, a dark wave that lapped hungrily at the lip of the hidden corridor before spilling inside with a greedy hiss.
She stumbled back instinctively, nearly losing her footing on the slick stone. Her dagger felt suddenly inadequate against this new threat, a flood that moved with malevolent purpose. The water wasn't just water anymore; it was alive somehow, each wave carrying a low groan that seemed to come from the stone itself.
Merrin's gaze darted between the rising tide and the darkness beyond the passage entrance. She could hear it now—the faint rustling of something moving through the water, something with too many legs. The sound grew louder, closer, and she knew they weren't alone down here anymore.
The Guardian still watched her from its alcove, those glowing eyes seeming to pulse in time with the rising water. Merrin felt a chill that had nothing to do with the cold lake water soaking her clothes. She was trapped between a flood and whatever horrors lurked within it, with no clear path forward and the structure groaning ominously around them.
She took a deep breath, forcing herself to think past the rising panic. Varikka needed her. They both needed to find higher ground, or at least some kind of shelter from this encroaching tide. The passage might be dangerous, but it was their only option left.
Merrin gripped her dagger tighter and stepped forward into the darkness, the cold water swirling around her ankles as she disappeared into the unknown corridor.
