The stone tower groans under its own weight, ancient timbers settling with a sound like sighing ghosts. The runes beneath the door pulse with fresh dark energy, each beat sending a visible ripple across the dusty ground. The air thickens, growing heavy and cold despite the afternoon sun baking the stones outside.

Jeane steps forward, her demonic wings shifting restlessly behind her as she raises her crossbow toward the crumbling portal. "Halie, Merrin—you two take point to either side of the door," she orders, voice steady despite the obvious tension in her shoulders. "Varrika and Seraphine, guard our flanks. I'll hold center with covering fire if needed." Her crimson eyes scan the portal for any sign of movement while her thumb checks the bolt mechanism with practiced ease.

Halie moves forward with a cleric's caution, mace in one hand and crossbow slung across her back. Her blue-grey eyes narrow as she focuses on the rune beneath Jeane's boot, now pulsing with visible malevolent energy. "We need to proceed with extreme caution," she says softly, but firmly. "Let's not rush into any unnecessary risks."

Merrin edges closer to the tower door, eyes darting, crossbow at the ready. Her heart's pounding like a drum in her ears. She mutters, "Well, this is cheerful. Always wanted to be skewered by reanimated bones on my next adventure." The halfling scout knows better than to rush into obvious traps, but every second spent outside feels like an invitation for whatever lurks within.

Seraphine steps forward, her sharp eyes fixed on the ancient carvings decorating the door. She traces their patterns with a scholar's focus, noting how they seem to shift subtly in the torchlight. It’s not just decay; this place is alive with dark magic, feeding on something we can’t see yet. "I agree. This isn't mere rot," she mutters, her voice a low murmur that barely carries over the creaking of the tower stones.* "Whatever animated these defenses wasn't some ancient enchantment, it's new. The energy feels... fresh."

Varrika moves to flank position with practiced ease, her heavy mace gripped tight in scarred hands. The ancient runes on this door are fresh with magic, dark and wrong. Whatever raised these defenses wasn't some dusty enchantment, it's new. "Merrin, mark their positions when they show themselves," she calls out, voice steady despite the obvious tension.* "Seraphine, have a spell at the ready to clear our path if need be. And keep those crossbows steady, Halie, Jeane. We don't know what's waiting for us in there." The air is thick with the scent of dust and something else—death, perhaps, or just the smell of ancient stone soaked in blood.

The stones groan again, louder this time, as if the tower itself is about to vomit up its long-held secrets. The runes pulse faster now, a frantic heartbeat counting down to... what?
