The afternoon sun beats down mercilessly on the ancient stonework, baking the air until it smells of dust and decay. The tower looms overhead like a monolith from some forgotten age—massive blocks fitted together with the precision of craftsmen long dead. Each runic carving across the portal groans under its own weight, settling with a sound like teeth grinding in a sleepless jaw.

Halie steps forward with the cautious tread of someone walking on eggshells made of glass. Her blue-grey eyes narrow as they fixate on the ominous doorway before them—the massive wooden barrier now pulsing with fresh dark energy that sends visible ripples across the dusty ground at its base. She hefts her heavy mace in both hands, knuckles white around the shaft.

"Well," she mutters under her breath, more to herself than anyone else, "this is definitely not what the tourist brochure promised." Her gaze flicks sideways for a moment—taking in the rest of her party with an appraising eye. Jeane stands at the fore with crossbow raised and demonic wings shifting restlessly behind her pale shoulders. Merrin hovers near the wall, crossbow ready but eyes darting nervously between the tower entrance and their surroundings. Varrika and Seraphine form a solid rear guard, gear clinking softly as they shift weight.

"Right then," Halie continues in a voice that tries for steady and fails miserably, "I suppose we should proceed with extreme caution." She edges closer to the door—each step feeling like walking toward an open grave—and kneels down carefully beside one of the pulsing runes. Her fingers hover just above the stone surface without quite touching it.

"Magic feels wrong here," she announces after a moment of focused concentration. "This isn't ancient decay—someone or something has been actively feeding these enchantments recently." She looks up at Jeane, expression caught between worry and barely concealed fear. "Any ideas on how to proceed that doesn't involve walking into what's obviously a death trap?"

Jeane: The succubus woman's crimson eyes narrow as she listens to Halie's assessment, her gaze flicking between the kneeling cleric and the ominous doorway beyond. Her demonic wings shift restlessly behind her, the dark leathery membranes rustling softly in the still air.

"Feeding enchantments recently," Jeane muses aloud, more to herself than anyone else. "That's... concerning." She lowers her crossbow slightly—just enough to free one hand that immediately moves to trace complex patterns in the air before her. Her lips move silently as she casts a spell of detection, crimson eyes never leaving the portal.

After a moment, she shakes her head slowly. "I can sense powerful magic inside—the kind that makes my teeth ache just thinking about it." Her voice drops to a near-whisper. "Whatever's in there, it's not natural. Not anymore."

Merrin: The halfling scout woman edges closer to Halie, her crossbow still held at the ready but her attention divided between the potential threats ahead and the equally concerning conversation unfolding. She chews her lower lip nervously—a habit that surfaces whenever her instincts are screaming warnings she doesn't fully understand.

"Natural magic," Merrin repeats, her voice barely audible. "So we're dealing with something that's been unnaturally enhanced? That's just great." She shifts her grip on the weapon, thumb checking the bolt mechanism reflexively. "Because what we needed was more complications in this already shitty situation."

Seraphine: The dark-haired elf scholar woman steps forward from her position near Varrika, her keen eyes fixed on Jeane as she works her spell of detection. Her fingers twitch with barely restrained magical energy—years of academic study and arcane practice screaming at her to investigate further even as every instinct for self-preservation urges caution.

"What kind of magic?" she asks, voice tight with controlled curiosity. "Necromancy? Abjuration? Something else entirely?" She moves to stand beside Halie, careful not to block anyone's line of fire or escape route. Her gaze flicks between the runes and Jeane's face, searching for clues.

Varrika: The dwarf woman shifts her stance, feet planted wide and mace held ready in a grip that speaks of countless battles fought and won. Her scarred face hardens into grim determination as she listens to the exchange—every instinct honed by decades of combat screaming at her that something very wrong lies beyond that door.

"Magic we don't understand," Varrika growls, voice barely above a rumble. "Great. Just fucking great." She glares at the portal with open hostility, as if sheer force of will could compel the darkness within to reveal its secrets. "Anyone else getting the feeling we've stumbled into something way beyond our pay grade?"

Jeane: The succubus woman lowers her hands slowly, the spell's energy dissipating around her in visible ripples that make the air shimmer like heat haze. Her expression is unreadable—demonic features schooled into a mask of cold calculation that reveals nothing of the turmoil beneath.

"Abjuration and necromancy," she says finally, voice flat and even. "Layered over ancient warding spells that were meant to protect this place, not... this." She gestures vaguely at the pulsing runes. "Someone has repurposed this tower's original defenses into something else entirely—something dark and hungry."

Merrin: The halfling woman feels a shiver run down her spine at Jeane's words, crossbow lowering slightly as the implications sink in. Her quick eyes dart between the succubus and the ominous doorway, mind racing through possibilities and consequences.

"Hungry," she repeats softly, then glances at Halie. "You know what this means, right? Whatever's in there isn't just guarding treasure—it's feeding on something." Her stomach twists with apprehension, but her voice remains steady. "We're not just breaking into a dusty old tomb here. We're interrupting a dinner party for whatever passes for undead aristocracy these days."

Seraphine: The elf scholar's eyes widen fractionally at Merrin's words—horror and morbid fascination warring for dominance on her elegant features. She takes an involuntary step back, one hand moving to clutch at the spell components hanging from her belt.

"Feeding," she echoes, voice barely above a whisper. "You mean... souls? Life energy? Something like that?" Her gaze flicks between the pulsing runes and the darkness beyond the door—suddenly very aware that whatever lies within might view them not as adventurers but as potential courses.

Varrika: The dwarf woman's grip tightens on her mace until her knuckles turn white, the rough wood creaking under the pressure. A low growl rumbles up from her chest—half fury, half fear—as the true nature of their situation finally crystallizes.

"Souls," she spits, voice dripping with contempt. "So we're not just dealing with some overgrown skeleton guard—we're interrupting a goddamn necromancer's buffet line." She glares at the doorway with renewed intensity, mace held ready. "Well, fuck this noise. If whatever's in there wants a snack, it can come and get us properly armed and armored."

Jeane: The succubus woman's wings snap wide for a moment—an instinctive reaction to the sudden surge of magical pressure from within the tower. Her crimson eyes flash with inner light as she raises her crossbow once more, aiming carefully at the center of the doorway.

"Everyone back off," she snarls, voice losing its earlier calm entirely. "Something's moving inside—and it's big." The runes beneath the door pulse faster now, each beat sending fresh waves of dark energy washing over them. Wood groans against stone—something massive shifting within.

Merrin: The halfling woman doesn't need to be told twice—she's already backing away fast, crossbow still trained on the doorway but her eyes darting for escape routes. Her heart hammers against her ribs as the magical pressure intensifies, every instinct screaming at her to run.

"What in all the hells is that?" she hisses, voice tight with fear. The groaning wood shifts again—louder this time—and a fresh plume of dust billows out from beneath the door.

Seraphine: The elf scholar stumbles backward, components forgotten as pure adrenaline drives her movements. Her quick mind races through spells and countermeasures—but nothing in her extensive arcane knowledge feels remotely adequate against whatever's about to emerge.

"Jeane—" she starts to say something, then clamps her jaw shut. There's no time for questions or debate now—their lives hang in the balance, and every second counts.

Varrika: The dwarf woman plants her feet wider, mace held in a two-handed grip that speaks of readiness to meet whatever comes through that door head-on. Her scarred face hardens into grim determination as she sees the dust plume.

"Whatever it is," she growls, "it's coming now." The runes beneath the door pulse once more—brighter than ever before—and then there's a sound like thunder from within. Wood splinters, stone groans in protest...

Jeane: The succubus woman fires her crossbow without hesitation, the bolt streaking toward the center of the doorway just as something massive slams against the barrier from inside. The ancient wood explodes outward in a shower of splinters and dust—revealing what lies beyond.

Merrin: The halfling woman's eyes go wide with horror as she sees what emerges from the darkness—a towering figure clad in rusted but still imposing plate armor, easily ten feet tall. But it's not the size that chills her blood—it's the wrongness of the thing.

Seraphine: The elf scholar stumbles backward, one hand clutching at a spell component pouch while the other reaches for a wand at her belt. Her eyes fixate on the monstrosity in the doorway—tendrils of dark energy writhing across its bone structure like shadowy veins, eye sockets glowing with malevolent green fire.

Varrika: The dwarf woman takes one look at the abomination filling the doorway and knows, with cold certainty, that their situation has just gone from bad to catastrophic. This isn't a simple undead—this is something that should never have been brought back to this plane of existence.

"FUCK!" she roars, charging forward with mace raised. If they're going down, she intends to take the thing with them.

Jeane: The succubus woman fires again—her second bolt streaking toward the creature's chest cavity—but even as she looses the shot, she knows it's useless. This thing operates on a different plane of existence entirely.

"Retreat!" she screams, already backing away. "Now! Everyone—MOVE!"

Merrin: The halfling woman needs no further encouragement—she's already sprinting for the nearest cover, crossbow forgotten as pure survival instinct takes over. Her small size works in her favor as she ducks under a low archway and into the shadows beyond.

Seraphine: The elf scholar stumbles backward, spell components scattering from her trembling hands as she tries to cast something—anything—that might help. But the magical energy around the creature is unlike anything she's encountered before, and her usual incantations fail utterly.

"Shit—shit—" she gasps, finally turning to run after Merrin.

Varrika: The dwarf woman's heroic charge falters mid-stride as Jeane's command hits her. Years of combat experience screaming at her to stand and fight war with the cold logic of survival—she's outmatched, and charging this thing is suicide.

"FUCK!" she roars again, but this time it's a curse of frustration as she pivots hard and follows the others into retreat.

Jeane: The succubus woman backs away faster, wings half-spread for balance as she fires her last two bolts in rapid succession. Both strike home—one lodging in the creature's shoulder joint with a satisfying crack of breaking bone, the other punching through rotted ribcage to embed in what remains of lung tissue.

"Run!" she screams one final time before turning and sprinting after the others, demonic speed carrying her up the crumbling stairs to higher ground.
