Round 1

Phase: escalating

The tower's ancient stones groaned under the weight of new purpose, its wards pulsing with fresh dark energy that coiled around the base like a waking serpent. The party stood before the crumbling gate, a barrier sealed by runes that now answered their presence with a malevolent thrum.
Jeane drew her crossbow with practiced ease, thumb checking the bolt mechanism while her crimson eyes scanned the portal for any sign of movement. "Interesting," she murmured, more to herself than the group. "The tower remembers visitors." Her wings shifted restlessly behind her, leathery and dark against the gloom.
"Halie, Merrin—you two take point to either side of the door," Jeane ordered, voice steady despite the obvious tension in her shoulders. "Varrika and Seraphine, guard our flanks. I'll hold center with covering fire if needed." The ancient stone seemed to exhale dust as they approached, the very air thick with warnings.
Halie moved forward with a cleric's caution, mace in one hand and crossbow slung across her back. Her blue-grey eyes narrowed as she focused on the rune beneath Jeane's boot, feeling the low hum that made her skin crawl. "Whatever animated these defenses last night was substantial magic," she warned softly. "We need to be prepared for anything."
Merrin edged closer to the tower door, every nerve ending screaming warnings. Her dark eyes darted across the shadows, fingers twitching near her own crossbow. A muttered oath escaped her lips before she spoke louder, voice tight with barely contained fear. "Well, this is cheerful. Always wanted to be skewered by reanimated bones on my next adventure." She inched closer to Jeane's winged form, keeping her voice low and tight with tension. "Oi, magic lady. Any chance your fancy spells can hold these walking toothpicks at bay? I'd rather not be a shish-kebab today, if it's all the same to you."
Seraphine gripped her heavy mace tighter, the leather-wrapped hilt cool against her sweat-slicked palm. The air here felt heavy, thick with some ancient, malevolent intent. "The runes on that gate... they're pulsing with fresh power," she murmured to Varrika, who stood tense at her side, own weapon held ready. Her sharp eyes darted between the dark opening ahead and the shadowy forest that surrounded them—a potential refuge if this went wrong.
Varrika hefted her own heavy mace, feeling its familiar weight in her calloused hands. The air here felt thick with old magic and newer menace. She scanned their surroundings, looking for any sign of movement in the shadows. "Alright, listen up," she grunted, speaking low but forceful. "We're not walking into this blind." Her voice carried the authority of a veteran who'd seen too many close calls. "Halie, Merrin—you two keep those crossbows ready. Jeane, Seraphine, stay sharp with your spells. We move as one, cover each other's backs. And if anything comes through that door... Well, we'll see what these bones are made of."
The stones groaned again, louder this time—a sound like a great beast shifting in its sleep. The runes pulsed faster now, their dark energy coiling tighter around the entrance. Somewhere inside the tower, something ancient and hungry stirred.
