Phase: converging · forced · organic escalating

The air around the tower thickens with an ancient magic that makes Varrika's skin crawl. The gate's runes pulse faster in response to Jeane's proximity, their light casting grotesque shadows across her pale features. She hovers her fingers above the surface, close enough to feel the vibration but not quite touching—her wings twitch nervously behind her back.
Merrin slips into the alcove with a dancer’s grace, her curiosity overriding caution. The moment her boot hits the stone floor inside, the ward’s hum intensifies. The runes flare brighter, their light spilling out to illuminate the crumbling walls in harsh relief. She freezes mid-crouch, one hand extended toward something unseen within the darkness.
Seraphine steps forward, her scholar’s eyes gleaming with fascination despite the obvious danger. "Incredible," she breathes, more to herself than anyone else. "Sentient arcana—this is beyond even the most advanced magical theory I’ve studied." She begins sketching furiously in her journal, trying to capture every detail of the ward’s response.
Varrika plants herself between Halie and the gate, her heavy mace resting on one shoulder. "Enough sightseeing," she growls. "We need to know what we’re dealing with here before someone gets themselves killed." The dwarf’s scarred face is etched with concern as she watches Merrin in the alcove.
Jeane’s crimson eyes narrow as she studies the pulsing runes. "This isn’t just a lock," she says, her voice tight. "It’s a gatekeeper—a guardian that’s been waiting for visitors for centuries." She glances at Merrin, then back to the ward. "Merrin, get out of there now. We don’t know what might set this thing off."
The ward’s hum deepens into something almost like a groan, and the air grows heavy with the stink of old decay and stale magic. Something shifts in the darkness beyond the gate—a sound like stone grinding against stone.
