The air crackled with ancient magic as Varrika and Merrin approached the tower's entrance. The runes etched into the gate pulsed with an eerie light, casting grotesque shadows across their faces.

"Something's alive in here," Varrika whispered, her fingers barely grazing the stone surface. The ward responded immediately, a low hum vibrating through the barrier and into her bones. "The magic responds when I touch it." She shot Merrin a warning look. "I need you where I can see your hands. Too many stories about rogues tripping wards with their 'skillful' fingers."

Merrin's eyes widened slightly, but she nodded, stepping back and raising her hands in a gesture of compliance. The halfling scout had never been fond of magical traps—too many variables, too much potential for catastrophic failure.

Varrika turned her attention back to the gate, her crimson eyes narrowing as she studied the runes more closely. Each symbol seemed to pulse with its own rhythm, the patterns shifting subtly as she watched. "This is beyond anything I've encountered before," she murmured, more to herself than to Merrin.

Seraphine stepped forward, her dark elegant hair catching the flickering torchlight. The elf scholar's keen gaze was fixed on the ward, a frown of intense concentration etched into her features. "The magic here is unlike anything in my studies," she said softly, her voice barely more than a breath of sound. "A tangible presence, writhing beneath the stone."

The three adventurers stood in tense silence for long moments, the weight of ancient power pressing against them from beyond the gate. The air inside the tower seemed to shimmer with anticipation, waiting for their next move.

Finally, Varrika spoke again, her voice low and measured. "We need to understand this ward's mechanics before attempting entry. Its sentience could be our greatest asset—or our undoing." She glanced at Merrin. "Stay close, stay visible, and keep your hands away from anything that looks remotely like a trigger."

Merrin nodded, her expression a mix of apprehension and grudging acceptance. The halfling had never been good at taking orders, but she knew when to swallow her pride for the greater good. Especially when the alternative might involve being turned into a smoking crater by ancient magic.

Seraphine moved closer, her robes whispering against the stone floor. "I can attempt to document the ward's response patterns," she offered, pulling out a small leather-bound journal from within her pack. "If we can map its triggers, we might find a safe entry method."

Varrika considered this for a moment, then nodded slowly. "Do it. But be careful—one wrong move could trigger everything." She turned her attention back to the gate, her fingers hovering just above the surface without touching. The runes pulsed in response, their light growing slightly brighter.

The tower seemed to hold its breath around them, the air thick with anticipation. Somewhere deep within, a slow, deliberate footstep echoed through the stone—as if something ancient and terrible had heard their arrival and was coming to investigate.

Merrin's hand drifted instinctively toward her crossbow, but she caught herself mid-reach. Varrika was right; firearms were useless against magic this powerful. She settled for shifting her stance, ready to dive for cover at the first sign of trouble.

Seraphine began her documentation, her quill scratching softly against parchment as she recorded each subtle shift in the ward's behavior. The elf's face was illuminated by the pulsing rune-light, casting eerie shadows across her concentration-furrowed brow.

Varrika continued her careful examination of the gate, her mind racing through every spell and counter-spell she knew. This wasn't just a ward—it was a living thing, ancient and powerful beyond measure. And they needed to find its weakness before it found theirs.

The air inside the tower seemed to grow colder, heavier, as if the very stone was pressing in around them. Another footstep sounded, closer this time, and Merrin felt a shiver run down her spine that had nothing to do with the temperature.

They were running out of time. Whatever lay beyond this gate wasn't going to wait much longer for them to decide their next move. The ancient magic pulsed hungrily, eager for... something.

Varrika took a deep breath, steeling herself. "We need to make a choice," she said quietly, her eyes still fixed on the shifting runes. "Do we attempt to bypass this ward now, or wait for whatever's inside to come to us?"

Merrin and Seraphine exchanged a glance, both women's expressions reflecting the same apprehension. The decision was theirs—and the wrong choice might be their last.

The ancient magic hummed around them, waiting for an answer.
