"Wait," she says to Merrin, her voice carrying an involuntary seductive undertone even as she issues warning. "Those aren't just decorations." The runes indeed respond visibly when Merrin's fingers brush against them—accelerating their pulse, flaring with a sudden intensity that speaks of sentience and hunger. Merrin, undeterred by the ward's reaction, peers into the shadowy alcove she discovered earlier. The faint glow pulses like a heartbeat, casting eerie shadows on the crumbling stone walls. A tingle runs up her spine as she steps closer, fingers tightening around her crowbar. "Well," she mutters under her breath, "if there's another way in, we'd be fools not to check it out." Her quick hands itch to pry open whatever secrets the darkness might hold.
Jeane's crimson eyes narrow as she watches Merrin approach the hidden entrance. "Merrin," she calls out, her voice a blend of concern and exasperation. "The ward is clearly active and responsive—we don't know what might set it off." She turns to Halie. "Can you document those runes from here? We need to understand their mechanics before anyone else touches them."
Seraphine steps back, her keen eyes scanning the area. "I'll prepare some defensive spells," she offers. "Whatever's inside that tower is getting closer—we might need to move quickly." Her fingers trace arcane patterns in the air as she begins weaving a protective enchantment.
The ward's runes continue their ominous pulsing, each beat seeming to draw more power from the surrounding woods.
