The ancient runes on the gate continue to shift and pulse, responding to Jeane's touch with a speed that belies their age. The air around her seems to vibrate with magical energy, and the ward responds with a low hum, as if it is awakening from a deep slumber. Merrin, still inside the alcove, stirs the air with her movements, and the magic within reacts, casting flickering shadows on the walls. The ward's hum grows louder, more insistent, and Jeane takes a step back, her eyes fixed on the runes as if they hold the key to understanding the barrier's intentions. Halie watches from a safe distance, her hand on the hilt of her sword, as she documents the runes in her book with swift strokes of her quill. Her eyes flicker up to Jeane, then back to the gate, where Merrin now stirs again, her movements more agitated. The air within the alcove seems to be growing thicker, more charged with magic, and Seraphine's voice cuts through the tension, "Merrin, be careful – we don't know what we're dealing with here."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The air crackles with magic, raising the hairs on my neck. I tighten my grip on the heavy mace, muscles tensing as I ready myself for whatever might come bursting through that gate. My eyes dart between Halie, Merrin, and Jeane. Halie's face is a mask of concentration as she studies those ominous runes, fingers itching to reach out and trace their ancient patterns. Merrin's fidgeting has me on edge - the halfling's got a glint in her eye that spells trouble. And Jeane... well, our sorceress seems deep in communion with something beyond my understanding. I step forward, positioning myself between Halie and the gate, a solid bulwark against any threat that might emerge from the shadows. "Careful now," I grunt, eyeing the runes warily. "We don't know what'll happen if you go poking around in there."

The gate pulses, a low hum building to an insistent drone. The air feels thick, heavy with the weight of ages and dark purpose. I shift my feet, ready to move at a moment's notice. "Halie," I call over my shoulder, "what do those runes say? Any clues about what we're dealing with here?"

My voice is gruff, but there's an undercurrent of concern. This tower... it feels wrong. Ancient and hungry, like it's been waiting for us to come stumbling into its trap. I glance at Merrin, a warning in my eyes. "Keep your hands to yourself, little one," I mutter. "We've got enough problems without you setting off any hidden booby traps."

The gate pulses again, the hum rising to a shrill whine. I brace myself, every sense on high alert. Whatever this ward wants... we'd best be ready to face it head-on. But for now, I hold my ground, a stalwart wall of dwarven muscle and iron between my companions and the unknown dangers that lurk beyond. The mace feels good in my hands, a familiar weight that grounds me in the face of magic and mystery. We'll face this challenge together, as we always have. But I'll be the first line of defense... just as it should be.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane steps forward, her wings rustling softly as she examines the ancient gate. The runes etched into the stone pulse with an eerie light, responding to her presence. She reaches out slowly, fingers hovering just above the cold surface of the metal. "The ward responds when I touch it," she says, voice controlled but barely concealing her unease. "Its sentience is undeniable and hostile."

She glances back at Merrin, a warning in her eyes. "Merrin, I need you here where I can see your fingers and what they touch. Varrika, cover our rear flank with that mace of yours." Her voice tightens. "No one moves until we understand what this ward wants from us."

The gate groans as if waking from a long slumber. Jeane's eyes narrow as she listens to the stone itself speak through the vibration in her hand. The magic here is ancient and powerful, far beyond anything she's encountered before. "We're dealing with something that pre-dates our kind," she mutters more to herself than anyone else. "This isn't just a trap—it's alive."

She turns back to Halie, who's been diligently documenting the runes. "What do those symbols tell you? Any clue what it wants in exchange for passage?"

Her hand hovers at her hip, close to her arcane focus, ready to defend herself and her companions if necessary.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch Jeane's fingers hover over the ancient runes, the air crackling with an energy I can almost taste. The magic here is unlike anything I've ever encountered in my studies. It’s not just a passive defense, not merely a spell woven into the stone. It’s sentient. Reacting.
My eyes dart to Merrin as she disappears into that shadowy alcove, her curiosity a dangerous thing right now. We need her sharp wits and nimble hands, not a broken body on some fool’s errand. I call out, my voice tight with concern:
"The magic... it's unlike anything I've encountered before. It’s not just a passive defense. It’s sentient. Reacting."
I take a step closer to Jeane, trying to see the patterns she’s studying so intently in the runes. The symbols shift and writhe under my gaze, making my head spin. This is no simple ward. This is something alive.
My mind races with possibilities. If this thing is truly aware, then perhaps it can be reasoned with. Or perhaps it demands a price for entry—a sacrifice of some kind. I shudder at the thought, but it seems more likely than a simple lock to be picked or spell to be broken.
