Phase: converging

The gate's mechanism creaks, and a section of it gives way, allowing a narrow sliver of dim light to seep from beyond. Dark magic bursts forth, releasing a palpable aura of malevolent energy that makes the air thick with tension. The runes on the gate shatter, their fragments scattering across the ground like shards of bone.
Jeane steps closer, her crimson eyes narrowed as she studies the pulsating symbols with the focused intensity of a predator examining prey. "This is no mere lock," she murmurs, more to herself than anyone else. "These runes are alive—bound spirits or trapped souls, maybe. They're not meant to keep us out; they're meant to devour us whole." She turns to Seraphine. "Can you sense anything? Any pattern or key that might open this without setting off every defensive spell they've got waiting?"
Seraphine moves back several paces, her elegant robes swirling around her as she raises both hands in a gesture of magical assessment. Her dark hair catches the flickering torchlight from behind, casting her face into stark relief as she concentrates. The air around her fingers begins to shimmer with arcane energy, tracing complex patterns that dance and twist in the gloom.
Halie steps forward, her voice steady but laced with genuine concern. "I've seen wards before—this one isn't just about keeping out intruders. It’s designed to consume them." She gestures toward the gate where fresh cracks are spreading across the stone. "Those runes pulsed like a heartbeat when Merrin started working the lock, and now they're breaking apart from within? Whatever’s inside is alive, it’s hungry, and it knows we’re here."
Varrika grips her mace tighter, the weapon's heavy head gleaming in the torchlight. "This ain't right," she mutters, her eyes fixed on the gate. "Them runes... they're alive. Watchin' us." She glances back at Halie, still holding her holy symbol. "Keep your wits about you, Cleric. Whatever's in there..." Her voice trails off, unable to put words to the unease settling in her gut.
The slow footsteps echoing from within the tower grow louder, and the air seems to vibrate with an ominous energy. The Ward's pulse quickens, its magic responding to the forced entry with a predatory intensity. Something ancient and hungry stirs beyond the gate, drawn by the scent of intruders and the breaking of its own wards.
Jeane's eyes narrow further as she watches Seraphine work her magic. "Well?" she demands, her voice barely above a whisper. "Can you sense anything useful? Or are we about to become part of this thing's collection?"
Seraphine's expression remains focused, her fingers tracing more complex patterns in the air. "There... something... like a key, but wrong." She shakes her head, frustration evident. "The magic is sentient—it’s resisting my attempts to decipher it. Whatever this ward was designed for, it wasn't meant to be opened by conventional means."
Halie moves closer to Varrika, her hand still gripping the holy symbol. "We need to back away, regroup, and consider our options very carefully before forcing this issue." She looks at each of them in turn. "Whatever's inside... we're not prepared for it yet. The magic here is too strong, too hungry."
Varrika nods slowly, her grip on the mace relaxing slightly. "Aye," she agrees reluctantly. "The Cleric's right. This feels wrong—too easy an entry, and now this ward's comin' apart like rotten wood." She glances back toward the trees. "Let's fall back to those ruins we passed earlier. We can make camp there, regroup, and figure out our next move with clear heads."
Jeane hesitates for a moment, her eyes still fixed on the gate and the pulsing runes. Then she nods sharply. "Fine. But we're not leaving entirely—too risky to lose line of sight on this thing." She turns to Merrin. "You. Get that crossbow ready and keep watch from a safe distance. If anything comes out, signal immediately."
Merrin nods, raising the crossbow and moving back toward the tree line with practiced stealth. The rest of the party begins to retreat, their eyes still fixed on the ominous gate as they disappear into the shadows of the Whispering Woods.
The gate stands alone now, its magic pulsing hungrily in the silence left behind. Whatever ancient power guards this tower, it has tasted intruder flesh and found it... satisfactory. The Ward's hunger grows stronger, fed by the breaking of its own wards and the promise of more sustenance to come.
