The tower's ancient magic pulses with hunger, each beat sending fresh waves of malevolent energy washing over them. The runes on the sealed gate shatter in a burst of blue light, their fragments scattering across the ground like shards of broken bone. Merrin edges closer to the wall, her halfling caution warring with curiosity as she eyes the shifting patterns of dark power crawling over the stone surface.

"Well," she mutters under her breath, "this certainly isn't what I expected when Elric mentioned 'ancient ruins.'" She glances at Halie and Jeane. "So, what's the plan? We can't just stand here staring at it all night."

Jeane's wings shift restlessly behind her as she considers their options. "We need to understand this ward before we attempt to bypass it," she says finally. "If we trigger the wrong sequence, we could unleash every defensive spell they've got—and I guarantee none of them are meant to be friendly." She turns to Merrin. "Put those lockpicks away and let me work. Halie, maintain a prayer shield around us—something passive, non-intrusive. We don't want to broadcast our intentions too clearly."

Halie nods, raising her silver cross necklace as she begins to murmur a low chant. A faint golden aura surrounds the group, shimmering against the backdrop of dark magic seeping from the gate. "Done," she says softly. "But be quick—whatever's in there is getting closer. I can feel it."

The air grows colder as something massive moves beyond the stone barrier, its footsteps echoing through the night. The ward's magic pulses faster now, each beat sending a fresh wave of malevolent energy washing over them. They stand poised on the edge of darkness, ancient power humming all around—and no clear path forward except through the gate itself.

Merrin shifts her weight from foot to foot, hands twitching with the urge to do something—anything—to break this standoff. But even her rogue's instincts scream caution. This magic is old and hungry, and they're trespassers in its domain.

Jeane leans closer to the gate, her eyes scanning every inch of the shattered rune patterns. "There has to be a way," she mutters, more to herself than anyone else. "Every spell has a key—every lock has a way to open it without setting off alarms." Her fingers trace symbols in the air as she works through potential solutions, wings still shifting restlessly behind her.

Halie maintains her prayer shield, the golden aura surrounding them a fragile barrier against the encroaching darkness. She can feel something ancient and malevolent pressing against its edges—something that hungers for their life force and magical essence. "Jeane," she says softly, "whatever you're planning, make it quick. I don't know how long this shield will hold against that kind of power."

The footsteps stop on the other side of the gate, and a low rumble echoes through the stone—a sound like boulders grinding together or bones clicking into place. The ward's magic pulses once more, then falls still. Something has passed through it—something that now stands between them and whatever lies beyond.

Merrin draws her crossbow with practiced ease, eyes fixed on the gap in the gate as she prepares for whatever might emerge. "Everyone ready?" she asks, voice barely above a whisper.

Jeane straightens up, a grim smile on her lips as she turns to face the others. "I think I've got it," she says, excitement threading through her voice despite the tension. "There's a counter-spell sequence hidden in the rune fragments—they're not just decorative, they're part of the key." She raises her hands, arcane energy gathering around her fingertips. "But we need to act fast—whatever just passed through probably triggered every defensive measure this place has."

Halie nods, holy symbol clutched tightly as she prepares to channel divine energy if needed. "Do it," she says simply. "We'll cover you."

Merrin keeps her crossbow aimed at the gate's opening, finger resting lightly on the trigger. "Just tell us what to do," she mutters, eyes never leaving the darkness beyond.

Jeane begins to trace complex patterns in the air with her glowing fingers, each movement precise and deliberate as she weaves together the shattered rune fragments into a new spell configuration. The dark magic of the ward seems to resist her at first, pushing back against her control—but slowly, surely, it begins to bend to her will.

The air crackles with power as Jeane's spell takes shape, arcane energy swirling around her in a vortex of blue and gold. She opens her mouth to speak the final incantation—

But before she can utter the words, something massive shatters through the gate from within—a horde of skeletal warriors, their bones gleaming with dark magic as they surge forward with inhuman speed.

Merrin fires her crossbow instinctively, the bolt punching through the lead skeleton's skull just as Jeane's spell completes. The ward's magic explodes outward in a wave of pure force, slamming into the undead horde and sending them scattering backward.

But the gate has closed again, its stone surface sealing shut with an ominous finality. They're trapped inside—surrounded by darkness, ancient magic, and an army of the dead that's already regrouping for another charge.

Jeane grits her teeth, arcane energy still crackling around her fingers as she assesses their situation. "Well," she says, voice tight with barely contained panic, "at least we managed to open the damn thing without setting off every trap?"

Merrin reloads her crossbow with practiced efficiency, eyes darting between the regrouping skeletons and the now-sealed gate behind them. "Yeah," she mutters, "because that was our biggest problem—being trapped in a death-trap tower with an army of undead."

Halie raises her holy symbol high, divine energy blazing around it as she begins to chant a protective spell. "Focus!" she snaps, voice sharp despite the fear evident in her eyes. "We need to form up and prepare for their next charge. Merrin, cover left flank—Jeane, support me with arcane barriers if you can. I'll handle direct exorcism on anything that gets too close."

The lead skeleton raises its skull toward them, jaw working silently as it gathers the others into a tight formation. Then they charge forward again, bone feet pounding against the stone floor in a macabre rhythm.

Merrin fires another crossbow bolt, taking out a second skeleton with a satisfying crunch of shattering bone. But there are too many of them—dozens at least, and more seem to be emerging from shadowy alcoves along the corridor.

Jeane raises her hands, arcane energy crackling between her palms as she begins to weave a defensive spell. "Halie!" she calls out, voice strained with concentration. "I can't maintain this for long—you need to clear them fast!"

Halie nods, holy symbol blazing with divine light as she completes her own spell. A wave of purifying energy explodes outward from her position, washing over the leading skeletons and sending several of them disintegrating into dust.

But the rest press onward, seemingly undeterred by their comrades' fate. The corridor is too narrow for them to flank around the group's formation, but it also limits their ability to retreat or maneuver effectively.

Merrin fires again, then again, each bolt finding its mark but barely seeming to slow the undead horde's advance. "This isn't working!" she shouts, frustration evident in her voice. "We need a better plan than just standing here shooting them!"

Jeane grits her teeth, arcane barriers flickering as she struggles to maintain their defenses against the sheer weight of dark magic pressing in from all sides. "I've got an idea," she gasps between spells, "but it's risky—we'll need to break formation and move fast."

Halie slams her holy symbol into a particularly aggressive skeleton, divine energy exploding outward and sending it shattering into pieces. "Do it!" she snarls, already moving into position. "Just tell us what you need!"

The lead skeleton is almost upon them now, its bony hands reaching for Merrin's throat—

Jeane unleashes her spell in a burst of arcane force that slams into the corridor walls on either side, creating two narrow pathways through the oncoming horde. "Move!" she screams, already sprinting down the left passage.

Merrin doesn't hesitate, firing one last shot into the lead skeleton's chest before following Jeane through the gap in the undead ranks. Halie brings up the rear, holy symbol blazing as she lays down a trail of purifying energy to slow their pursuers.

The skeletons pause for just a moment, caught off guard by the sudden change in tactics—but it's all the time they need. The three women sprint down the narrow corridor, arcane barriers and divine energy keeping the undead at bay just long enough for them to gain some distance.

As they round a corner and lose sight of their pursuers, Merrin risks a glance back. "That," she pants between breaths, "was not part of the plan when Elric mentioned 'ancient ruins'!"

Jeane skids to a halt in front of an ornate door, wings spread wide for balance as she studies its rune-covered surface with frantic concentration. "New plan," she gasps, already tracing symbols in the air. "We find somewhere to hole up and regroup—someplace these things can't easily follow us."

Halie slides to a stop beside her, holy symbol still raised as she maintains a low-level prayer shield around them all. "Agreed," she manages, voice tight with exertion. "But we need to move fast—they'll be on us again in minutes if we don't find shelter soon."

Merrin checks her crossbow's remaining bolts—eight left—and curses under her breath. "Fine," she hisses, eyes darting down the corridor they just fled from. "But next time someone suggests 'ancient ruins,' I'm voting for the ones with fewer animated skeletons, okay?"

Jeane snorts despite the tension, fingers moving faster as she works through the door's rune sequence. "Deal," she mutters, arcane energy crackling around her hands. "Now shut up and let me concentrate—I think I've almost got this!"

The sound of bone feet scraping against stone echoes from around the corner—the skeletons are closing in fast. Halie raises her holy symbol higher, divine light flaring brighter as she redoubles her efforts to maintain their protective barrier.

"Almost there," Jeane hisses through clenched teeth, wings beating rapidly with exertion as she pours more arcane energy into her spell. The runes on the door begin to glow with an eerie blue light, responding to her magic—

The lead skeleton rounds the corner just as the door swings open with a groan of ancient hinges. Jeane doesn't hesitate, shoving Merrin and Halie through the opening before following herself. The door slams shut behind them just as the first skeletal hand reaches for the frame.

They stand panting in the sudden darkness, hearts pounding and magic still crackling around their fingertips. Whatever lies ahead in this new chamber, it has to be better than facing that army of undead alone in a narrow corridor.

Merrin leans against the cold stone wall, crossbow still raised as she listens for any sound from beyond the door. "Okay," she says after a moment, voice barely above a whisper. "New question—what exactly is behind this door?"

Jeane holds up a hand for silence, wings settling slowly as she extends her arcane senses into the darkness ahead. After a long moment, she lowers her hand and lets out a breath they didn't realize they were holding. "Nothing immediately hostile," she reports softly. "Just... old stone and dust. No active magic beyond what's keeping these doors sealed."

Halie lowers her holy symbol, the divine energy around it dimming to a soft glow as she takes in their new surroundings. They seem to be in some kind of antechamber—large enough for them to move around comfortably, with several doorways leading off into deeper darkness. The air is thick with dust and the musty scent of centuries-old stone.

Merrin pushes off from the wall, crossbow still at the ready as she moves to investigate the nearest doorway. "Stay close," she murmurs over her shoulder. "We don't know what else might be lurking in here."

Jeane nods, arcane energy still crackling faintly around her fingers as she follows Merrin into the deeper chamber. The runes on the door behind them continue to pulse with a soft blue glow—whatever magic sealed it shut is still active and powerful.

Halie brings up the rear, holy symbol held ready as she scans their surroundings for any sign of threat. "We need to find somewhere defensible," she says softly. "Someplace we can rest and regroup before deciding our next move."

Merrin pauses at the threshold of a new doorway, holding up a hand for silence as she listens intently. After a moment, she nods and steps through into what looks like a larger chamber beyond. The ceiling here is higher—perhaps twenty feet above them—and the room itself seems to stretch away into darkness in several directions.

Jeane moves to join her, wings shifting restlessly as she studies the shadows with frantic concentration. "I'm not picking up anything immediately dangerous," she murmurs, eyes scanning the gloom for any sign of movement. "But this place... it feels wrong somehow. Like the stone itself is alive with residual magic."

Halie slides to a stop beside her, holy symbol still raised as she maintains a low-level prayer shield around them all. "I feel it too," she says softly. "This whole tower... it's saturated with dark energy. We need to be careful here—every stone might hide a trap or a guardian."

Merrin lowers her crossbow slightly, though still keeps it at the ready as she moves further into the chamber. Her rogue's instincts are screaming at her to tread carefully—this place feels wrong in ways she can't quite explain. "Fine," she mutters, eyes darting around the shadowy corners and alcoves lining the walls. "But let's find somewhere we can actually see all our exits, yeah? I don't fancy having something sneak up on us while we're trying to sleep."

Jeane nods in agreement, moving to flank Merrin as they explore the chamber more thoroughly. Her arcane senses extend outward in a protective net, ready to warn them of any magical threats hidden in the darkness. "Agreed," she says softly. "And we need to find a way to seal this room from inside—something that won't trigger whatever defensive spells are still active throughout the tower."

Halie moves to cover their rear, holy symbol held at the ready as she maintains her divine aura around the group. Her eyes scan constantly for any sign of undead or other threats lurking in the shadows. "There," she says suddenly, pointing to a section of wall near one corner of the chamber. "That looks like it might be some kind of mechanism—see the seam there? Maybe it slides closed to seal the room?"

Merrin approaches the wall section carefully, crossbow still raised as he examines the apparent mechanism. After a moment, she nods and reaches out to touch it—carefully, prepared to yank back if anything happens. The stone panel slides aside with surprising ease, revealing a hidden passage that seems to lead deeper into the tower.

Jeane moves to examine the newly revealed corridor, arcane energy crackling around her fingers as she probes its depths with her magical senses. After a moment, she straightens up and turns back to the group. "It's clear," she reports softly. "At least as far as I can sense. But it also looks like it leads further into the tower—deeper than where those skeletons were coming from."

Halie moves to stand beside her, holy symbol held ready as she extends her divine senses down the corridor. After a moment of concentration, she nods slowly. "I don't sense any immediate threats," she says softly. "But this whole place... it feels wrong somehow. Like the very stone is alive with dark energy."

Merrin lowers his crossbow slightly, though still keeps it at the ready as he considers their options. The idea of going deeper into this cursed tower is far from appealing—but staying in the main chamber leaves them exposed to whatever might come through that sealed door behind them.

Jeane meets Merrin's gaze, crimson eyes gleaming faintly in the darkness. "We could try to find another way out," she suggests softly. "But if there are multiple entrances to this place—and I suspect there must be, given how many skeletons we encountered—then going deeper might actually be safer. At least we'd have more control over our surroundings."

Halie nods slowly, though her expression remains grim. "She's right," she says softly. "Moving deeper gives us more options for defense and escape routes. But we need to be cautious—whatever's at the heart of this tower is going to be far more dangerous than those skeletons."
