The gate's mechanism creaks, and a section of it gives way, allowing a narrow sliver of dim light to seep from beyond. Dark magic bursts forth, releasing a palpable aura of malevolent energy that makes the air thick with tension. The runes on the gate shatter, their fragments scattering across the ground like shards of bone. The slow footsteps echoing from within the tower grow louder, and the air seems to vibrate with an ominous energy. The Ward's pulse quickens, its magic responding to the sudden disturbance. A faint, blue glow emanates from the runes, casting eerie shadows on the walls as they begin to writhe like living things. The unknown entity within the tower takes a step closer to the gate, its pace deliberate and measured, as if savoring the party's hesitation. The cold wind howling from the gateway arch dies down, replaced by an oppressive silence that seems to weigh upon the party like a physical force.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I step closer to the gate, ignoring my fatigue. The runes pulse like living things—blue fire in ancient stone teeth. Each beat of their magic feels predatory, calculating our worth as potential prey. I don't trust easy entryways in cursed places, especially when they're opening themselves without a proper key. Merrin, stop. Do not touch those locks with iron until we find another way through or around. The mechanism just gave way because you forced it—I warned Halie that forcing this would be dangerous, but she insisted on rushing forward regardless of caution. Seraphine, can you sense any gaps in the pattern? Any rune that might serve as a key if we can trigger it correctly instead of breaking it? There has to be a more subtle way through than brute force. This magic feels sentient—it's watching us, measuring our desperation against its hunger. The footsteps within are getting closer. Whatever's in there knows we're here now for certain. We need to decide quickly if we go in prepared and cautious, or if we back away and find another approach entirely.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I've seen wards before—this one isn't just about keeping out intruders. It’s designed to consume them. Those runes pulsed like a heartbeat when Merrin started working the lock, and now they're breaking apart from within? Whatever’s inside is alive, it’s hungry, and it knows we’re here. This feels wrong. We need to back away, regroup, and consider our options very carefully before forcing this issue. >Varrika, I know you want to charge in there with your mace ready, but that thing needs subtlety right now, not brute force. Merrin—please, stop trying to pick locks with iron tools until we find a way around the magic itself. And Jeane, be careful what you attempt with your sorcery—any misstep could feed it exactly what it wants. >Seraphine, if anyone can sense patterns in this mess of a lock, it’s you. Tell me what you see. Is there any gap, any weakness we can exploit? Because I don’t think breaking through the front door is going to go well for us. >These aren't just traps—this entire gate is alive with dark magic that’s measured our desperation and found it wanting. We need a plan that doesn’t involve becoming its next meal. >We have options: try to find another entrance, set up wards of our own to counter this thing's power, or maybe even negotiate somehow. But whatever we do, it needs to be smart, not just reckless.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch as Merrin's lockpicks clink against the mechanism, the sound echoing loudly in the still air of the Whispering Woods. My heart hammers against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat of warning.
The runes on the gate shimmer and pulse, their blue glow intensifying with each passing second. It’s as if they’re alive, watching us, measuring our resolve against their own unyielding purpose. The magic feels sentient, almost hungry.
I take a step back, my hand instinctively reaching for my spellbook at my hip. "Stop," I say, my voice so low it is almost lost in the air, yet it cuts through the tense silence like a blade. "Stop trying to force it. This magic... it has teeth. Literal teeth waiting to snap shut if we aren't careful."
I turn to Jeane, who stands nearby, her face etched with concern. "Can you sense any gaps in the pattern? Any way to unravel this without triggering its defenses?"
The slow, deliberate footsteps echoing from within the tower seem to grow louder, more insistent. A shiver runs down my spine, a chill that has nothing to do with the cold wind whipping through the gateway arch.
I look around at my companions, their faces illuminated by the eerie blue light of the runes. Halie’s holy symbol glows faintly in her hand, a beacon of hope against the encroaching darkness. Varrika grips her mace tightly, her muscles coiled like a spring ready to release. And Merrin... Merrin still fiddles with the lock, her impatience a tangible force in the air.
This is what we came for, I remind myself. The Time-Splitting Sword. But at what cost? The runes seem to mock me, their pulsing light a silent taunt. We need to proceed cautiously, or risk becoming just another set of bones piled at the tower's entrance.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I stop my attempts at the gate, taking a step back. The runes seem to pulse faster now, their blue glow intensifying. I can feel the magic radiating off them like heat from a forge. "This ain't right," I mutter, gripping my mace tighter. "Them runes... they're alive. Watchin' us."

I glance back at Halie, still holding her holy symbol. "Keep your wits about you, Cleric. Whatever's in there..." I trail off, unable to put words to the unease settling in my gut. My eyes scan the shadows beyond the gate, half-expecting skeletal hands to emerge from the darkness and grasp at our throats. I've faced undead before, but never anything with magic this strong. This ancient. "We need a plan," I say, turning to face the others. "Can't just charge in now. That Ward's got teeth, and I don't much feel like bein' its dinner."
