Round 8

Phase: escalating

The ancient gate's mechanism groans in protest as one rune shatters, its dark magic bursting forth in a shower of sparks that smell like ozone and decay. The sudden crack echoes through the corridor beyond, followed by an ominous silence that feels heavier than before. Jeane steps closer to the barrier, her wings half-spread for balance, crimson eyes narrowed as she studies the pulsating symbols with the focused intensity of a predator examining prey.
"This is no mere lock," she murmurs, more to herself than anyone else. "These runes are alive—bound spirits or trapped souls, maybe. They're not meant to keep us out; they're meant to devour us whole." She turns to Seraphine. "Can you sense anything? Any pattern or key that might open this without setting off every defensive spell they've got waiting?"
Seraphine moves back several paces, her elegant robes swirling around her as she raises both hands in a gesture of magical assessment. Her dark hair catches the flickering torchlight from behind, casting her face into stark relief as she concentrates. The air around her fingers begins to shimmer faintly with arcane energy.
"I can feel... something," she says slowly, her voice tight with concentration. "There's a rhythm to it, like a heartbeat or breathing. But the pattern is wrong—it's not designed for opening, it's designed for trapping and consuming." She opens her eyes, meeting Jeane's gaze with unease plain in her expression. "I wouldn't touch those locks if I were you. The magic feels... hungry."
Halie steps forward, her voice ringing with authority that cuts through the oppressive silence. "Everyone—stop immediately! Do not touch those runes until we understand their function!" She moves to stand beside Varrika, one hand resting on the haft of her heavy mace. "These aren't just warnings—they're teeth waiting to close on anything foolish enough to force its way through. I've seen this kind of binding before in texts: a ward designed to consume intruders."
The half-elven cleric's blue-grey eyes scan the group, lingering briefly on Merrin's still-extended lockpicks with obvious disapproval. "Varrika, stand back with your mace ready." Her gaze shifts to the two spellcasters. "Merrin, put those lockpicks away. Jeane and Seraphine—I need you both to analyze the pattern while maintaining distance from direct contact."
From deeper within the tower, a sound echoes—a slow, heavy footstep followed by another. The wind howls again, louder this time, carrying with it the faintest suggestion of laughter or perhaps just more wind through ancient stone. The runes on the gate pulse faster in response, their blue fire growing brighter and more intense.
Jeane's expression darkens. "Merrin," she says, her voice low and dangerous, "put those picks away now before you accidentally trigger something we can't stop." She turns to Halie. "I agree with your caution, but standing here forever isn't an option either. We need to find another way through or around this barrier."
Seraphine nods slowly, her hands lowering as the shimmering arcane energy fades from her fingers. "I might be able to document the ward's structure from a distance—if we're careful, it could provide invaluable information for future study." She glances at the corridor beyond the gate, then back to the group. "But I won't lie—the magic feels... sentient. And hungry."
The footstep sounds again, closer this time. Whatever is moving through the tower's depths is drawing nearer, and the thought of being trapped inside with it makes the hair on the back of Halie's neck stand up. She exchanges a glance with Varrika, who shifts her grip on the heavy mace, ready for action but clearly uneasy about facing unknown threats in enclosed spaces.
Jeane's wings twitch with barely contained impatience. "We can't stay here forever discussing the ward's appetite. If something's coming, we need to decide now—force the gate, find an alternative route, or retreat." Her crimson eyes flick to Merrin, then back to Halie. "And if we do force it, I want a very specific plan for how we open it without setting off every trap in the place."
The ward's magic pulses again, a hungry rhythm that seems to echo the footsteps drawing ever closer. The air inside the corridor grows colder, and something like a whisper carries on the wind—words half-formed, meanings just beyond comprehension. Halie feels a chill settle over her, not from the cold but from the realization that they've only begun to understand the depths of the danger they're in.
"We need to move," she says firmly, though her voice carries an undercurrent of apprehension. "But carefully. Very carefully."
