Phase: converging · forced · organic escalating

The air inside the tower pressed down like a physical weight, thick and resisting their passage. Torchlight flickered wildly across crumbling walls slick with some unidentifiable fluid—oil? Blood? Something worse? The whispers that had pursued them through the woods coalesced into something disturbingly like laughter echoing through the corridor ahead—a sound that scraped against sanity.
Seraphine descended carefully behind Merrin, every bootfall tested before weight shifted fully onto creaking boards that groaned with ominous protest. The wood felt wrong beneath her feet—too yielding in places, too rigid in others, as if the structure itself was slowly coming apart around them. Her caution was rewarded when a section of floorboard gave way under Varrika's heavier step, collapsing inward with a loud crack.
"Fucking hell!" Varrika cursed, stumbling backward as the floor swallowed her leg up to the knee. She yanked herself free before more could follow, heart pounding. "This place is a death trap!"
Merrin paused at the threshold of a new passage revealed by the collapsed staircase. The air...
A faint glow emanated from deeper within the passage, casting an eerie light on the ancient runes that writhed and twisted in the flickering flames. Suddenly, the air was filled with a cacophony of whispers, each one a different voice, but all speaking a single, chilling phrase: "You should not be here." The ground beneath Merrin's feet began to shudder, and the walls started to crack, sending jagged pieces of stone tumbling down.
Halie's muffled cries for help echoed back through the unstable corridor. She had managed to claw her way partially free from the rubble, but her leg was trapped, and every movement sent fresh agony shooting up her thigh. The air tasted wrong—like iron and decay—and every rune in this corridor screamed at her not to touch them. But Merrin's hurt knee needed tending before infection set in here. And Varrika was right—I don't like being underground with something this foul breathing on us.
Seraphine stepped back from the crumbling archway, her keen elven eyes scanning the pulsing runes etched into the stone. The air here was thick with an ancient malevolence, a palpable force that seemed to press against her skin like a physical weight. The sound of shifting rubble and Merrin’s muffled exclamation of pain reached her ears from deeper within the passage.
Her heart clenched. Halie was trapped, injured, and the energy emanating from those sigils felt like it could strip the very sanity from their minds. The whispers that had pursued them through the woods coalesced into something disturbingly like laughter echoing through the corridor ahead—a sound that scraped against sanity. The ground beneath Merrin's feet began to shudder, and the walls started to crack, sending jagged pieces of stone tumbling down.
