The whispers that had pursued them through the woods coalesced into something disturbingly like laughter echoing through the corridor ahead—a sound that scraped against sanity. Varrika yanked herself free from the collapsed floorboards with a curse, heart pounding. "This place is a death trap!" The wood felt wrong beneath her feet—too yielding in places, too rigid in others, as if the structure itself was slowly coming apart around them.

Merrin paused at the threshold of a new passage revealed by the collapsed stair, her injured knee throbbing. The air inside the new corridor felt different—cold and wrong in a way that made her skin crawl. Ancient runes pulsed with malevolent energy along the walls, their patterns seeming to writhe under the torchlight.

"Stop right there!" Jeane's voice cut through the oppressive atmosphere, sharp and commanding. The tall succubus woman stepped forward, crimson eyes scanning the pulsing sigils with obvious distress. "The energy here is ancient and malevolent. One wrong step could trigger something we can't stop."

Seraphine felt her stomach twist as she watched Jeane's reaction. The wizard knew enough about magic to understand that when a specialist like Jeane looked this disturbed, the situation was grave indeed.

"Merrin," she called out, moving closer but maintaining distance from the corrupted corridor. "What do you see in there? Can you describe the runes?"

Merrin hesitated, her hand hovering near the hilt of her sword. The air inside the passage felt like it was pressing against her, resisting entry. But Halie's cries for help were growing more desperate.

"Just... stones and dust," Merrin replied, though she wasn't entirely sure that was true. Something about the shadows seemed to move wrong, even in the flickering torchlight. "And cold. Really cold."

Jeane shook her head sharply. "No. Those aren't just stones—they're sigils of binding and containment. And they're active." She extended her hands, dark magic swirling around her fingertips as she began casting a spell to analyze the magical field.

Varrika watched the sorcerer's distress with growing concern. Jeane wasn't easily spooked—if she was this agitated, whatever lay ahead was truly dangerous. The dwarf shifted her grip on her mace, ready for trouble.

"Jeane," Varrika called out, her voice low and steady. "Talk to us. What exactly are we dealing with here?"

The succubus woman's eyes remained fixed on the corridor as she spoke, her voice tight with barely controlled fear. "Demonic energy. Old and powerful. Someone sealed something in this passage—something big—and those seals are failing." She finished her spell, the dark magic dissipating as she processed the results. When she turned back to face the party, her expression was grim.

"This whole section is unstable," Jeane continued. "The containment spells are deteriorating from within. If we go in there, we risk breaking whatever's holding back whatever's trapped inside." She met Varrika's gaze directly. "We need to find another way up. This corridor is too dangerous."

Seraphine felt a chill run down her spine that had nothing to do with the tower's unnatural cold. If Jeane—one of their most powerful spellcasters—was advising against entering a particular area, they needed to listen.

"Agreed," the wizard said quickly. "We'll search for an alternative route. Merrin, stay where you are—we're coming to help with Halie." She turned to Varrika. "Together?"

The dwarf nodded grimly. "Aye. Let's get our healer out first, then we'll figure out our next move."

As they moved to assist Merrin, the laughter echoing from deeper within the tower seemed to grow louder, more triumphant. The air itself felt wrong—thick with anticipation and ancient malice. Whatever lay ahead in that collapsed corridor, it was something they were not meant to disturb.
