The air inside the tower pressed down like a physical weight, thick and resisting their passage. Torchlight flickered wildly across crumbling walls slick with some unidentifiable fluid—oil? Blood? Something worse? The whispers that had pursued them through the woods coalesced into something disturbingly like laughter echoing through the corridor ahead—a sound that scraped against sanity.

Halie descended carefully behind Merrin, every bootfall tested before weight shifted fully onto creaking boards that groaned with ominous protest. The wood felt wrong beneath her feet—too yielding in places, too rigid in others, as if the structure itself was slowly coming apart around them. Her cleric's senses screamed warnings: this wasn't mere decay or structural instability. Something fundamental had gone wrong here, reality bruised and bleeding dark energy into everything it touched.

Jeane hovered on the stairs above, wings half-spread for balance, crimson eyes fixed on intricate symbols carved into the stone wall opposite their position. The runes pulsed with malevolent energy, each carven line seeming to writhe in the flickering torchlight like living shadows given form. She reached out a hand toward them, fingers trembling slightly as she traced the air above the stone surface without touching it directly.

"These are..." Jeane's voice came soft and strained, "demonic sigils. Old power. Bound here for... something." Her face contorted with effort as she focused her senses outward, wings flexing instinctively as if preparing to take flight or shield herself from an unseen blow. "I can feel it pulling at me. Trying to drag me down."

Seraphine turned back to face the others, her expression troubled. The air seemed to shift around them, and the malevolent energy emanating from the pulsing sigils intensified. The wooden floor creaked ominously, and Halie's careful descent caused a section of the landing beneath her to give way with a sickening crack. She tumbled down a narrow, winding staircase that descended into darkness below, the sound echoing through the corridor followed by the faint scraping of wood against stone.

Merrin eyed the ominous passage warily, hand tightening on her crossbow. The air reeked of wrongness, of power best left undisturbed. But they had come too far to turn back now. "Alright, let's see where this leads," she muttered, "but keep your wits about you. Something tells me we ain't alone in here." With a deep breath, she stepped into the darkness, senses straining for any hint of danger.

The shadows seemed to whisper and shift at her approach, as if the very stone was alive with malice. Merrin forced herself to take slow, deliberate steps down the winding staircase, one hand trailing along the cold wall for balance while the other kept her crossbow trained on the darkness ahead. Each creak of the ancient wood beneath her boots sent a jolt through her system, but she pushed onward, driven by desperate curiosity and the burning need to uncover the truth hidden within these walls.

Varrika moved forward with heavy steps, her fighter's instincts screaming warnings even as her practical nature demanded caution. She eyed the pulsing sigils warily, the malevolent energy they emanated raising the hairs on the back of her neck. They had come too far to turn back now, but she knew better than to let her guard down in a place like this.

"Merrin, hold up," she called out, stepping forward to block her path with an upraised hand. "That passage could be booby-trapped for all we know. Better to stick together and take the stairs." She turned to face the others, her voice grim but resolute. "Stay alert. Keep your weapons close. And whatever you do, don't touch those damn symbols."

The tower's depths seemed to swallow their hesitant steps, each echo of their passage swallowed by oppressive silence broken only by the drip of unseen fluid and the insidious laughter that seemed to emanate from everywhere and nowhere at once.
