The stone tower's interior pressed down with palpable weight, thick air resisting their passage. Torchlight flickered wildly, casting more shadows than illumination across crumbling walls slick with some indeterminable fluid. The whispers that had hounded them since entering the Whispering Woods grew louder, coalescing into something disturbingly like laughter echoing through the corridor ahead—a sound that scraped against sanity.
Halie descended carefully behind Merrin, every bootfall tested before weight shifted fully onto creaking boards that groaned with ominous protest. The wood felt wrong beneath her feet—too yielding in places, too rigid in others, as if the structure itself was slowly coming apart around them. Merrin glanced back at Halie, then up at Jeane's frozen expression, and something in her face hardened—reckless determination warring with self-preservation instinct made visible. "Something feels off here," Jeane called down, her voice tight. "Those runes on the wall—they're pulsing." She pointed to an intricate symbol carved into the stone, its edges glowing with a faint green light that seemed to...
