Phase: converging

The stones groaned under their own weight, the passage of centuries compressing them like ancient bones pressed into dust. Merrin crouched low against the crumbling wall, her keen halfling eyes scanning every shadow and crevice for signs of movement. The crossbow in her hands felt reassuringly solid, but she knew it would do little against whatever dark magic animated this place if they blundered into a trap. She glanced sideways at Jeane, noting the succubus woman's wings twitching restlessly—they were both thinking the same thing.
"This place gives me the creeps," Merrin muttered under her breath, more to herself than anyone else. "I don't like being this exposed." The tower loomed above them like a monstrous shadow against the pre-dawn sky, its stones stained with age and something darker, more malevolent. She could almost feel the weight of centuries pressing down on them.
Jeane, meanwhile, had moved away from the group to examine the entrance more closely. Her fingers traced the intricate carvings with a feather-light touch, crimson eyes narrowed in concentration as she deciphered the arcane symbols one by one. The magic here was unlike anything she'd encountered before—t...
Seraphine stood nearby, her sharp elven gaze fixed on the ancient runes adorning the stonework. She could feel the residual power pulsing through them like a diseased heartbeat, each symbol a node in some vast and terrible spell array. The air around her crackled with forbidden energies, raising the fine hairs on her arms despite the warm pre-dawn air.
"This is no ordinary tower," Seraphine said softly, more to herself than her companions. "The magic here... it's tied to time itself. To manipulate such forces..." She shook her head, a shudder running through her lithe frame. "We tread very carefully indeed."
A sudden gust of wind whipped through the courtyard, carrying with it a low, mournful whisper that seemed to emanate from the very stones themselves. The words were indistinguishable, but the tone was unmistakably malevolent—a chorus of damned souls crying out in eternal torment.
Merrin tensed, her finger tightening on the crossbow's trigger mechanism instinctively. "Did you hear that?" she hissed, eyes darting around the courtyard. "Sounded like... voices."
Jeane's wings unfurled slightly, a defensive gesture as much as a reflexive one. Her crimson gaze swept the area, seeking the source of the sound. "I heard it," she confirmed, her voice barely above a whisper. "And I don't think it was just the wind."
Seraphine, meanwhile, had pressed herself against the stone wall, her keen elven senses straining to pinpoint the origin of the eerie sound. Her fingers traced the ancient runes almost unconsciously, as if seeking some protective sigil or ward against the growing malice in the air.
"I think," she said slowly, "that we have just triggered something. The magic here... it's awakening."
The very stones seemed to shudder around them, dust falling from cracks and fissures that hadn't been visible moments before. A low rumble echoed through the ground—a sound like stone grinding against stone, growing louder with each passing second.
Merrin cursed under her breath, already moving back towards the group's original position. "Time to fall back," she said urgently. "This place is way too fucking active for my liking."
Jeane nodded in agreement, her wings folding tight against her back as she followed Merrin's retreat. "Agreed. We need to regroup and reassess before—"
Her words were cut off by a sudden, violent tremor that shook the entire tower. Stones shifted with an ominous grinding sound, and from somewhere deep within the ancient structure came the unmistakable clatter of... bones.
Seraphine was already moving, her long elven strides carrying her back to what passed for safety at the courtyard's edge. "I believe," she called over her shoulder, voice tight with barely contained fear, "that our undead friends have just been awakened."
The sound of scraping stone and clattering bone grew louder, accompanied now by a low moan that seemed to emanate from everywhere and nowhere at once. Something was coming—as if the very tower itself had vomited up its long-dead guardians.
Merrin skidded to a halt beside Seraphine, crossbow raised and aimed at the tower's base. "Fuck," she breathed, finger curling around the trigger mechanism. "How many do you think there are?"
Jeane landed beside them in a rustle of leathery wings, her hands already glowing with arcane energy. "Too many to count," she said grimly, eyes fixed on the darkness beyond the tower's entrance. "And I don't think they're alone."
The sound grew louder still—a cacophony of scraping bone and rattling armor, punctuated by those same mournful whispers that seemed to seep from the very air itself. The tower's ancient stones groaned in protest as something... many... emerged from its depths.
Seraphine clutched her staff tighter, the polished wood creaking in her grip. "We need to move," she hissed. "Now. Before they fully—"
Her words were cut off as a section of the tower wall suddenly crumbled away, revealing not more stone but a gaping darkness that seemed to swallow what little light remained. From within that void came a sound like tearing fabric and something huge... breathing.
Merrin's eyes widened in horror. "What in all the hells is THAT?"
Jeane's face paled even beneath her pale complexion, her wings instinctively half-spreading as if for flight. "I don't know," she whispered, voice barely audible over the growing cacophony of the undead horde and whatever new terror had just revealed itself. "But I think we've just found out what those legends about 'shadow demons' were really talking about."
The darkness within the newly opened passage seemed to pulse with malevolent energy, tendrils of shadow reaching out as if seeking something—someone—to ensnare. The air grew cold, unnaturally so, and the very stones beneath their feet seemed to vibrate with anticipation.
Seraphine took a step back, her elven instincts screaming at her to flee this cursed place immediately. "We need to fall back," she said, voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to remain calm. "Now. Before whatever that is gets out."
Merrin nodded sharply, already reversing direction. "Agreed. New plan: we run like hell and figure out our next move once we're not standing right in front of a demonic doorway."
