Merrin crouched low against the crumbling stone of the tower's base, her keen halfling eyes scanning every shadow and crevice for signs of movement. The crossbow in her hands felt reassuringly solid, but she knew it would do little against whatever dark magic animated this place if they blundered into a trap. She glanced sideways at Jeane, noting the succubus woman's wings twitching restlessly—they were both thinking the same thing.

"This place gives me the creeps," Merrin muttered under her breath, more to herself than anyone else. "I don't like being this exposed." The tower loomed above them like a monstrous shadow against the pre-dawn sky, its stones stained with age and something darker, more malevolent. She could almost feel the weight of centuries pressing down on them.

Jeane, meanwhile, had moved away from the group to examine the entrance more closely. Her fingers traced the intricate carvings with a feather-light touch, crimson eyes narrowed in concentration as she deciphered the arcane symbols one by one. The magic here was unlike anything she'd encountered before—twisted, powerful, and utterly corrupt. It called to something primal within her, something that craved release and chaos.

"This is... complicated," Jeane said finally, straightening up with a frown. "These aren't just protective wards—they're tied into something much bigger. Darker." She glanced back at Merrin and Seraphine, her expression showing both excitement and apprehension. "We can't just force our way in. There has to be a key—a specific sequence or pattern we need to unlock these seals."

Seraphine had been kneeling by the entrance, her sharp elven eyes poring over the ancient runes with an intensity that bordered on obsession. As Jeane spoke, she nodded slowly, a grim smile playing at the corners of her mouth.

"I agree," the wizard said softly, almost to herself. "The craftsmanship here is... exquisite." She gestured to one particularly complex symbol near the center of the ward. "See this? It's not just decorative—it's a focal point for the entire array." Her gaze lifted to meet Jeane's. "If we can decipher its purpose, we might be able to bypass the entire thing without triggering whatever guardians are waiting inside."

Merrin felt a shiver run down her spine at that. Guardians. Of course there would be guardians—this was exactly the kind of place where ancient evils hid their secrets behind undead minions and arcane traps. She tightened her grip on the crossbow, wishing she had more than just her wits and a few dozen bolts to rely on if things went wrong.

"Alright," she said after a moment, straightening up with a sigh. "So we need to solve a magical puzzle before we can even get inside? Great." She glanced around at the pre-dawn darkness surrounding them. "How long do you think this is going to take?"

Jeane shrugged, her wings rustling softly. "Hard to say. Hours, maybe? Days?" She moved closer to Merrin and Seraphine, lowering her voice. "And we need to be careful—if whoever's inside realizes we're trying to break in, they might decide to come out and meet us instead."

The three women exchanged glances, the tension between them palpable. They knew they had to proceed carefully—this ancient place held dangers beyond their imagining, and the Time-Splitting Sword was worth whatever risks they might face. But now, it seemed, those risks had just become far more immediate.

"Stay alert," Jeane whispered, her wings half-spread in a defensive posture. "Whatever's in there... it knows we're here."
