Jeane's crimson eyes trace the complex patterns of the pulsing runes, her expression tightening as she deciphers their true purpose. The air around them grows heavy and cold, thick with the stench of old decay and something metallic—blood and bone, perhaps. She speaks in a low voice, meant only for Seraphine's keen ears. "This isn't a ward meant to keep us out. It's a lock designed to let something... in." Her wings twitch nervously, the leathery membranes rustling softly.

Seraphine takes an instinctive step back, her elegant robes swishing against the stone floor. The sight of those shifting green runes makes her stomach churn with apprehension. She knows enough about arcane lore to understand the danger—this isn't simple magic, it's something older, darker. Something that twists the very fabric of reality. Her fingers twitch, already forming the gestures for a protective ward, though she hesitates. The last thing they need is to trigger some ancient booby trap with well-meaning spellwork.

Varrika stands her ground, her dwarf's nature making her less prone to fear than her companions. But even she feels the wrongness of this place seeping into her bones. The pulsing light from the runes casts eerie shadows across her scarred face, making her look even more grim and determined. She eyes the gate with a seasoned warrior's gaze, searching for weak points or obvious traps. Her hand tightens on her mace, ready to strike at whatever might emerge from the darkness beyond.

The whispering grows louder, a cacophony of voices just beyond hearing, like wind through dry bones or water through ancient pipes. It fills the chamber with an unsettling susurrus that sets teeth on edge and raises the hairs on the back of every neck.

Jeane leans closer to Seraphine, her voice dropping to a whisper. "I think I can map the trigger points if you create a small light source—something contained, not too bright. We need to see the full pattern without alerting whatever's inside." Her crimson eyes flick towards the darkness beyond the gate, then back to Seraphine's face. The warning is clear in her expression—this knowledge could be dangerous, but it might also be their only key to survival.

Seraphine nods slowly, her expression a mix of apprehension and professional curiosity. "A focused light source... yes, I can manage that." She raises her hands, fingers beginning to trace intricate patterns in the air between them. A soft blue glow begins to emanate from her palms, growing brighter as she concentrates. The light is contained, a sphere about the size of her fist that pulses gently with her heartbeat.

As the magical illumination spreads, the true horror of the rune-covered gate becomes apparent. The symbols aren't random—they form a complex series of interlocking patterns, each one depicting scenes of torment and sacrifice. And at their center, a single massive eye, carved from some unknown dark stone, seems to stare directly into each of them in turn.

Varrika lets out a low whistle, her weathered face grim. "By the ancestors' beards... what kind of madman designed this?" She takes a step closer, examining the carvings with a warrior's eye for weak points and hidden mechanisms. Her fingers trace along one particularly complex section before she pulls back sharply. "There's power here," she mutters. "Dark power. And it feels... hungry."

The whispers intensify, as if fed by their attention to the gate. The air grows colder still, and something like a breeze stirs through the chamber—though no obvious source exists for such a draft. It carries with it the unmistakable scent of decay and old death.

Jeane feels a tugging at her mind as she studies the patterns, a subtle but insistent pull towards the darkness beyond the gate. She resists instinctively, taking a step back and shaking her head as if to clear it. "There's... something in there," she says softly, her voice tight with unease. "I can feel it. Like a cold hand trying to drag me closer." Her wings wrap around herself protectively, the leathery membranes trembling slightly.

Seraphine's face pales as she feels the same insidious tug at her concentration. She extinguishes the light spell with a sharp gesture, her hands shaking slightly. "I felt it too," she admits, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's... trying to pull at our thoughts. Our magic." Her keen eyes scan the runes again, this time with new understanding. "These aren't just wards—they're designed to feed on the arcane energy of anyone who studies them too closely."

Varrika spits onto the stone floor, a dwarf's traditional gesture against evil. "Feeding on magic, eh? Sounds like dark sorcery to me." She glances around the chamber, her experienced eyes searching for any sign of movement or hidden threats. Satisfied that nothing immediate is about to attack them, she turns back to the gate with renewed determination. "Well, we didn't come all this way to turn tail and run because of a few creepy carvings. But we need to be careful how we approach this."

The whispers reach a crescendo for a moment before subsiding again, leaving an oppressive silence in their wake. The pulsing green light of the runes seems to have intensified slightly, as if feeding on their prolonged presence and attention.

Jeane meets Seraphine's gaze, a silent conversation passing between them. They both know that lingering here much longer could be dangerous—whatever power animates this gate is clearly aware of their presence now. But they also understand that knowledge is their best weapon against whatever lies within. The succubus takes a deep breath, steeling herself. "I think I can map the trigger points," she says softly. "But we need to move quickly. Whatever's in there... it knows we're here."

Seraphine nods, her expression a mix of professional interest and barely concealed fear. "I can create a containment field around you while you work—the ward won't be perfect, but it should shield you from the worst of whatever... influence... these runes possess." She raises her hands again, beginning to weave another spell. The air shimmers around Jeane, forming a faint blue barrier that pulses with arcane energy.

Varrika watches the magical display with a mixture of awe and suspicion—dwarf that she is, she's always been wary of wizardly arts. But she can see the practical value in what Seraphine is doing, and more importantly, she trusts the elf woman's skill. "You two handle the thinking," she grunts, hefting her mace. "I'll keep watch for any... surprises." She moves to flank Jeane's position, her eyes scanning every shadow and dark corner of the chamber.

As Jeane steps closer to the runes, the tugging sensation intensifies. She grits her teeth, focusing all her will on mapping the patterns rather than succumbing to the insidious pull. The carvings seem to shift and writhe under her gaze, each symbol connected to the next by intricate lines of force that pulse with dark energy. She traces them mentally, committing the pattern to memory while carefully avoiding direct contact with any individual rune.

Seraphine maintains the containment field, her brow furrowed in concentration. The magic flickers and wavers as she feels the corrupting influence of the runes trying to seep through her wards. It's like pushing against a physical wall made of cold, oily darkness—repulsive but insistent. She pours more power into the spell, sweat beading on her forehead as she fights to keep Jeane safe.

Varrika stands guard, her every sense alert for danger. The whispers seem to have subsided again, but she knows from experience that silence in a haunted place often means something is about to get very bad, very quickly. Her grip tightens on her mace as she scans the darkness beyond the gate—something moves there, she's sure of it now. A shifting in the shadows that could be her imagination... or could be something far worse.

The air grows colder still as Jeane completes her mental mapping of the rune pattern. She stumbles back from the gate, breaking contact with the insidious influence, and leans against Seraphine for support. "I've got it," she pants, her voice rough with effort. "But we need to get out of here. Now." Her face is pale, her wings hanging limply at her sides—whatever she saw in those patterns has shaken her deeply.

Seraphine catches Jeane, supporting the taller woman's weight with surprising strength for one so slender. She doesn't hesitate—as soon as the words are spoken, she begins to chant a teleportation spell, the arcane syllables tumbling from her lips with practiced ease. The air around them shimmers and distorts as the magic takes hold.

Varrika doesn't need telling twice. As soon as she sees Seraphine begin the spell, she moves to flank them both, ready to defend against any sudden attacks while they're vulnerable during the teleportation process. Her eyes never leave the darkness beyond the gate—something is definitely moving in there now, and it's getting closer.

The chamber around them blurs and fades as Seraphine's spell completes its casting. The last thing any of them sees before the world dissolves into swirling chaos is the massive eye carved into the center of the gate seeming to blink... and then fix its gaze directly on them with cold, malevolent intent.

The teleportation spell flings them back out into the relative safety of the moonlit clearing. They materialize in a stumbling heap, gasping for breath as the oppressive atmosphere of the tower dissipates. Jeane pushes herself upright first, her wings unfurling to catch her balance. "We need to talk," she says, her voice tight with urgency. "What I saw in those patterns... it wasn't just a ward. It was a prison. And something is trying to break out."
