Round 5 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Jeane examines the pulsing runes, her eyes narrow as she senses a dark energy emanating from them. She turns to Merrin and Halie, then glances back at Seraphine, her voice barely above a whisper. "This isn't just a simple ward. It's a key. The pattern here is... off. It's not about keeping us out—it's about letting something specific in."
As she speaks, the air in the chamber seems to grow heavier, the metallic tang growing stronger. Suddenly, a faint whispering begins, barely audible but unmistakable - a soft, raspy voice repeating a single phrase: "The Devourer waits."
Merrin's eyes widen as she looks at the runes, her mind racing with possibilities. She knows that if they're right about the wards, they have a narrow window of opportunity to bypass them before whatever is inside becomes aware of their presence. The whispering grows louder, the voice more urgent, and Seraphine's eyes flick towards Varrika, who remains poised at the threshold, ready for combat. The whispering reaches a crescendo, and the runes on the gate begin to glow with an eerie blue light - a signal that the wards are about to trigger.
Jeane steps forward carefully, her crimson eyes scanning the pulsing runes etched into the ancient stone. The air around them feels wrong—heavy and thick with residual dark magic that makes her wings twitch involuntarily. She extends a gloved hand towards one of the glowing symbols but stops just short. The pattern here is... off, she murmurs, more to herself than to the others. It's not about keeping us out—it's about letting something specific in. Or maybe... *closing her eyes for a moment,* ...it's already here. Her voice drops even lower. Whatever this ward is meant to do, it's not just a doorstopper. We can't just smash our way through these wards like some kind of barbarians. She turns to Merrin and Halie, then glances back at Seraphine. Merrin, what did you see in those runes? And Seraphine—you have experience with ward mechanics, yes? What's your read on this? Her eyes narrow slightly as she senses something shifting beneath them—as if the very stone is waking up to their presence. Her hand hovers near her crossbow but doesn't move to draw it just yet. The last thing they need right now is to alert whatever lies within by firing off a bolt in the enclosed space. Instead, she reaches into her coat and produces a small, ornate compass made of blackened iron and silver filigree—a tool for sensing magical currents. If this ward has a trigger point or a weak spot, I want to find it before we stumble into whatever dark sorcerer designed this thing. She begins slowly circling the entrance, her movements deliberate but careful as she traces the pattern of the runes with the compass's needle. Each pulse seems to make the device quiver slightly in her hand. Everyone stand back from the threshold, she instructs quietly. We need distance if whatever is being pulled in decides to arrive early.
I step back from the threshold of the dark tower, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. The air here is heavy, thick with the scent of old stone and something sharper—a metallic tang that prickles the hairs on my arms.
The runes on the gate pulse with a sickly green light, their patterns shifting and twisting in a way that makes my head spin. It's not just a ward, I realize with a jolt of cold dread. It's a key. A lock. And whatever it was designed to let in... it isn't meant for us.
"I don't like this," I mutter under my breath, the words lost almost immediately in the oppressive silence of the hallway. Merrin is still peering at the runes, her brow furrowed in concentration, while Varrika hovers nearby, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword. They seem so confident, so ready to charge in, but I can feel the unease radiating off them like heat from a fire.
I turn to Seraphine, my eyes wide. She's been quieter than usual, her gaze fixed on the runes with an intensity that borders on obsession. We need answers, and she's the one who has spent years poring over dusty tomes about this kind of dark magic.
"Seraphine," I call out, my voice a low whisper that seems to echo in the stillness. "What do you see? What are those wards doing?"
Varrika eyes the pulsing runes warily, her battle-scarred hands flexing around the haft of her mace. She's seen dark magic before, and the feeling it gives off is always the same - a cloying weight that seems to press down on the soul itself. "Those wards are no joke," she rumbles, her gravelly voice barely audible over the whispering wind. "We breach this gate, we do it smart. No rushing in half-cocked."
Her gaze flicks to Merrin, crouched by the threshold with a furrowed brow. "You find any way to get us through without tripping their defenses?"
Varrika's muscles coil, ready to spring into action at a moment's notice. But for now, she holds back from crossing that line. Whatever's in there, it don't want them walking in easy-like. They best be ready for a fight. But even as her body prepares for combat, Varrika feels a twinge of unease. The whispering grows louder, more insistent, and the air shimmers with an otherworldly energy. Whatever's inside this tower, it's not something to be taken lightly. She glances at Jeane, her eyes narrowing as she sees the sorcerer fiddling with some arcane device. "What are you up to?" she asks, a note of caution in her voice. "Best not to go poking around with that dark magic. We don't know what it might do."
Varrika's hand tightens on her mace, ready to smash whatever comes through that gate. But even as she prepares for battle, she can't shake the feeling that they're walking into something far more dangerous than just a few undead guards. The dwarf takes a deep breath, steeling herself for what's to come. "Alright," she says, her voice grim but determined. "Let's see what we're dealing with here."
