Phase: converging

The stone tower's entrance yawned like a dark maw, promising secrets and dangers in equal measure. Halie stepped forward first, her silver cross held out like a shield against unseen forces. The runes pulsed with a sickly light at her approach, and she took an involuntary step back.
"These aren't just symbols," she said softly, voice tight with concern. "They're active wards—dark magic designed to keep us out or... something in." She turned... Merrin approached from the other side, her quick hands scanning every detail of the ancient barrier. She ran a finger along one particularly complex rune, then let out a low whistle. "These wards are no joke," she muttered. "They're designed to defend against the living, but let in certain... entities." Her dark eyes flicked to Halie, then back to the stonework.
"Halie, your faith could b..." A cold breeze stirred, carrying with it the faint sound of bone scraping against stone. The pulsing runes flared brighter, and a figure stepped out of the darkness beyond the gate—a skeletal warrior, its bony hands grasping a tattered sword that seemed to weep with dark energy.
Jeane's eyes narrowed as she felt the dark magic thrum beneath her fingertips like a second heartbeat—no, worse than that. It felt like a leech, trying to pull the arcane energy right out of her. These wards weren't just barriers; they were traps designed by someone who understood the flow of power better than she'd like them to. The pattern here was... off. It wasn't about keeping them out—it was about letting something specific in. Or maybe...
"Stop!" Halie hissed, raising her cross higher. "We can't just charge ahead like we own this place. Merrin, whatever you saw in those runes—was it a way through? Or something worse waiting to be summoned?" The air inside the doorway tasted wrong—like old iron and grave dust. These wards weren't about keeping them out. They were designed to pull...something...in. Something that didn't belong in the world of the living.
Seraphine stood at the threshold, her sharp eyes fixed on the pulsing runes etched into its stone surface. The air was thick with the scent of old magic and decay, a palpable energy that prickled against her skin. The wards were a barrier, a test of worthiness designed to repel those who were unworthy of what lay within. They were not meant to be broken by brute strength alone. No, they were designed to let something... specific... pass through them, while keeping others out.
Varrika shifted her weight, feeling the reassuring heft of her mace in her grip as she eyed the pulsing runes warily. There was an itch between her shoulder blades, a sensation she knew all too well from the battlefield - the feeling of being watched, evaluated, by forces beyond mortal understanding. "Those wards are no joke," she muttered, more to herself than to the others. "We breach this gate, we do it smart. No rushing in half-cocked." She turned to their elven scout, Merrin, who'd been studying those damned runes like a scholar.
Merrin peered at the pulsing runes etched into the ancient gate, her brow furrowing as she tried to make sense of their arcane patterns. The wards hummed with dark energy, and she couldn't shake the feeling that they weren't meant to keep them out, but rather to let something specific in. "Careful now," she muttered under her breath, "might be we're walking into a trap."
