The air in the stone chamber grew colder with each beat of the central rune's pulsing green light. Halie knelt beside Merrin, her silver holy symbol clutched tight as she whispered prayers for protection against the spreading corruption. The elf's breathing came in shallow gasps now, skin taking on a sickly green hue that pulsed with each beat of the distant rune. The curse spread faster than they'd anticipated—if they didn't find a way to break it soon, Merrin might not survive the night. She looked up at Jeane standing frozen at the top of the stairs, seeing the succubus's wings twitching in agitation, her eyes wide with barely controlled panic.

Jeane stepped onto the central rune of the tower's chamber floor with a shudder that felt like something was scraping teeth against her soul. The air itself thickened around them—oppressive, wrong—and Merrin's breathing became too fast, too shallow as she convulsed again at their feet. She'd seen this before in ancient texts: possession by something old and hungry. "Stop." Her voice cut through the thick atmosphere with a sharpness born of genuine fear this time. "Halie is right—let her work. This isn't just about Merrin anymore."

Halie stood beside Merrin's convulsing form, holding up her Silver Holy Symbol, its light barely cutting through the oppressive darkness of this cursed chamber. The central rune on the Time-Splitting Sword pulsed with sickly green light—brighter now that they'd descended into its lair—and she could feel it pulling at something inside her, something ancient and hungry. Merrin's breathing was too shallow, too fast, her skin taking on a grotesque greenish hue where the sword's curse spread. She knew her prayers weren't enough to break this kind of corruption alone.

Varrika took a deep breath, steeling herself against the ancient malevolence that permeated this cursed place. Her grip tightened on her mace as she stepped forward to face whatever horrors lay ahead. "Halie, Merrin - stay alert," she growled, her voice a low rumble. "Jeane, keep those shadows of yours ready." She eyed the pulsing rune warily, feeling its sickly green light seep into her very bones. Whatever power this accursed tower held, it was unlike anything she'd faced in her years as a warrior. And yet, she knew she had to protect her companions—even if it meant descending into whatever hell awaited below.
