The stone stairs descended into darkness, each step carrying Varrika deeper into the tower's hungry embrace. Her scarred hands gripped the mace tighter as the air grew colder, heavier with the stench of ancient decay and something else—something that made her skin crawl and her teeth ache. The central rune pulsed below, its sickly green light painting the walls with shifting patterns of shadow and dread. She could feel it pulling at her, trying to drag her down into whatever waited in the cursed depths.

Halie knelt beside Merrin, her silver holy symbol clutched in trembling hands as she whispered prayers for protection. The elf's breathing came in shallow gasps now, skin taking on a sickly green hue that pulsed with each beat of the distant rune. The curse spread faster than they'd anticipated—if they didn't find a way to break it soon, Merrin might not survive the night. She looked up at Jeane standing frozen at the top of the stairs, seeing the succubus's wings twitching in agitation, her eyes wide with barely controlled panic. They were trapped between two dangers—the curse consuming Merrin from within and whatever ancient horror lay beyond that rune.

Jeane felt paralyzed by rising terror but forced herself to think through the fear. The magic here was too strong, too hungry—whatever lay below had been feeding on this tower for centuries, growing stronger with each passing year. They couldn't fight that kind of power head-on, not in their current state. But they also couldn't leave Merrin to die from the curse, and the stairs behind them were their only escape route. She glanced at Halie kneeling beside the dying elf, then back down at Varrika standing frozen at the bottom. They needed a plan—a clever solution that didn't involve charging into certain death.

The central rune pulsed again, brighter this time, and something shifted in the shadows beyond it. Varrika's hand tightened on her mace as she caught the movement—something large and pale moving just out of sight behind a crumbling stone pillar. She backed up a step instinctively, her scarred face set in a grim expression. Whatever it was, it had heard them. The game of cat-and-mouse had begun.

Jeane's mind raced through possibilities, discarding each one as too risky or impractical. They needed to break the curse quickly—needed Merrin stable enough to move before whatever lurked below decided to investigate their presence more actively. Her eyes fell on Halie again, still praying beside Merrin. The priestess had knowledge of curses and blessings, maybe she knew something that could help. "Halie!" she called out, voice tight with urgency. "Any ideas? Anything you know about breaking curses quickly?"

The stone chamber seemed to hold its breath as everyone waited for Halie's response. The pulsing rune cast grotesque shadows across ancient walls, and somewhere in the depths below, something large shifted again. Time was running out.
