Round 77 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Halie's silver holy symbol glows brighter as she approaches Merrin, illuminating the ancient carvings on the stone walls. The air is heavy with decay, and the Curse of the Sword spreads its influence, causing Merrin's skin to take on a greenish hue. As Halie holds the symbol up, the central rune on the Time-Splitting Sword pulses in response, its energy crackling with malevolent power. Suddenly, the Devourer stirs, its presence felt by all as the air thickens with an unholy hunger. The ground beneath Merrin's body trembles, and her convulsions slow, but only slightly, as if the Curse of the Sword is siphoning off her life force.
I step onto the central rune of the tower's chamber floor with a shudder that feels like something is scraping teeth against my soul. The air itself thickens around us—oppressive, wrong—and Merrin's breathing becomes too fast, too shallow as she convulses again at our feet. I've seen this before in ancient texts: possession by something old and hungry. "Stop." My voice cuts through the thick atmosphere with a sharpness born of genuine fear this time. "Halie is right—let her work. This isn't just about the sword anymore if whatever sleeps here is stirring because we're on its doorstep." I look down at Merrin, feeling something cold clutch my chest—a protective instinct that surprises even me despite how dangerous she's become. "Merrin can't go any further like this. We need to figure out what's happening before we stumble into a full-blown confrontation with whatever's below."
I turn to Varrika and Halie, keeping my voice controlled but firm: "The runes on the walls—they're reacting to the sword too. Look at how bright that central one is now that all four of us are here. We've triggered something ancient and powerful." I raise a hand, gathering shadow magic into my palm—it comes more easily than usual in this cursed place—and let it fade after proving the power still answers me. "I'm not backing down completely, but we need to be smarter about this. Let Halie work with Merrin for an hour or two while I scout ahead using shadow magic."
I stand beside Merrin's convulsing form, holding up my Silver Holy Symbol, its light barely cutting through the oppressive darkness of this cursed chamber. The central rune on the Time-Splitting Sword pulses with sickly green light—brighter now that we've descended into its lair—and I can feel it pulling at something inside me, something ancient and hungry. Merrin's breathing is too shallow, too fast, her skin taking on a grotesque greenish hue where the sword's curse spreads. I know my power over death cannot save her from this corruption, but I won't abandon her to it either. "Jeane," I say, voice strained with barely-contained fear and anger, "We can't leave her like this." The air itself is thick with malevolent intent, the very stone screaming its history of suffering. These walls have seen too much agony for my comfort.
I take a deep breath, steeling myself against the ancient malevolence that permeates this cursed place. My grip tightens on my mace as I step forward to face whatever horrors lie ahead. "Halie, Merrin - stay alert," I growl, my voice a low rumble. "Jeane, keep those shadows of yours ready."
I eye the pulsing rune warily, feeling its sickly green light seep into my very bones. Whatever power this accursed tower holds, it's unlike anything I've faced in my years as a warrior. And yet, I know I must face it head-on if we are to survive. "Let me take point," I say, putting myself between the others and the unknown. "If there's danger ahead, let me bear the brunt of it."
I feel the weight of Merrin's fate heavy on my shoulders, the burden of leadership settling like a stone in my gut. But I will not falter. Not now, with so much at stake. "Stay sharp, all of you," I warn, my eyes never leaving the shadows ahead. "This is far from over."
I step forward into the darkness, mace at the ready, senses straining against the ancient malevolence that clings to this place like a shroud. Whatever lies ahead, I will face it with the courage and strength of a dwarf warrior. And may the gods have mercy on our souls.
