The stone chamber seemed to hold its breath as the three women stood frozen in the thick, oppressive air. The central rune pulsed with sickly green light, each beat sending a shudder through Jeane's wings and a fresh wave of wrongness crawling across Halie's skin. Merrin convulsed at their feet, her breathing fast and shallow—too fast for human lungs to manage naturally.

"Stop," Jeane said, her voice cutting through the thick atmosphere with a sharpness that made both Halie and Varrika look up. The succubus stood on the central rune of the tower's chamber floor now, her crimson eyes wide with barely controlled panic, wings twitching against the magic that made them ache to their roots. The air itself felt wrong—thick with malevolent intent.

"Whatever this is," Jeane continued, voice strained despite the softness, "it's ancient and it's hungry." Her gaze darted around the circular chamber, taking in every detail: the writhing carvings on the walls, the winding staircase descending into darkness below, the sickly green light pulsing brighter with each passing moment and spreading tendrils of ancient death magic that seemed to press closer. "The runes on the walls are reacting to my presence—they pulse in rhythm now—brighter since entering this cursed chamber—and I can feel it pulling at something inside me, something old and hungry that recognizes its own kind."

Halie knelt beside Merrin without hesitation, pressing her silver holy symbol against the elf's forehead. The metal felt cold against fevered skin but grounded her—gave her something concrete to focus on besides the spreading corruption and the way Merrin's eyes rolled back in her head. Jeane's revelation hit like a physical blow—if the curse victim had been transformed by ancient magic, then releasing Merrin might not just free her but also unleash something far worse onto the world.

"Wait," she gasped out, breaking off her prayer mid-verse to address Jeane directly. "You're saying this... thing down there isn't human anymore? That it's some kind of—" She cut herself off as Merrin convulsed again, harder this time, back arching off the ground in a way that made Halie's stomach drop.

Varrika moved forward immediately, her heavy mace gripped firmly as she positioned herself between the two women and the descending staircase. The dwarf's weathered face set into grim determination—she'd seen enough battles to recognize when the situation was deteriorating fast.

"Halie," she growled, voice carrying clearly despite the thick air, "keep that holy symbol pressed against Merrin and don't stop. Jeane," her gaze shifted to the succubus descending the stairs, "if you can sense those outer runes, map them carefully—we need to know which path is safest if we have to go down there." Her scarred hands tightened on the mace handle as she continued in a lower voice. "And both of you—if anything changes suddenly or gets worse, say something immediately."

Jeane nodded once from her position halfway down the stairs—acknowledging Varrika's orders even as she extended her shadow tendrils further along the perimeter runes. The magic here felt wrong on a fundamental level—ancient death energy that pulsed with hunger and intelligence. She could feel it trying to latch onto her succubus nature, pull her in.

"Understood," she breathed back, voice barely more than a murmur despite the distance. "But there's something else you need to know—something I recognize from my own kind." Her tendrils traced along the outer edge now, mapping the defensive pattern. "Whatever's bound down there... it's not just a victim anymore. The magic has changed it—transformed it into something else entirely."

Halie's head snapped up at that revelation, her channeling of divine energy faltering for just a second before she caught herself and refocused. The implications hit her like a physical blow—if the curse victim had been transformed by ancient magic, then releasing Merrin might not just free her but also unleash something far worse onto the world.

"Wait," she gasped out, breaking off her prayer mid-verse to address Jeane directly. "You're saying this... thing down there isn't human anymore? That it's some kind of—" She cut herself off as Merrin convulsed again, harder this time, back.
