The air inside the tower had changed the moment they pried open the hidden panel—gone was the simple dusty decay of ancient stone, replaced by something far more insidious. Merrin took a deep breath through her nose, immediately regretting it as the stench hit her senses: old death mixed with ozone and something else, something that made her stomach turn.

She stepped into the revealed passage cautiously, boots testing each stone before committing weight fully. The ground felt wrong beneath her feet—too yielding, almost alive in a way stone should never be. Her rogue's instincts screamed warnings as she moved deeper, mace held ready in one hand while the other trailed along the wall for balance.

The central rune pulsed with sickly green light that bled out across the walls like spilled ichor, illuminating carvings that depicted a civilization's end in graphic detail. Buildings crumbled, figures consumed by shadow, skies filled with watching eyes that seemed to follow their movements despite being mere stone. The flickering torchlight made the scenes seem disturbingly animated.

A section of wall slid open silently, revealing a narrow staircase descending into darkness. The air wafting up from below was thick and heavy with menace, promising only trouble at the bottom.

Varrika moved forward instinctively, her warrior's training overriding momentary fear. "Stay sharp," she muttered, voice low as she scanned the shadows for movement. The very stone around them seemed to pulse with ancient malice, walls breathing in and out like a sleeping beast.

Jeane tested the air again—definitely something foul building—and the central rune pulsed brighter, responding almost actively to their presence. The carvings' glow intensified, spreading across new sections of wall as if feeding on their attention. Halie's holy symbol had gone cold the moment they entered this chamber—a clear sign of profane energies at work.

"Wait," Jeane said sharply, stepping forward with mace raised and arcane symbols already forming. "Something's changing down there. The magic feels... hungry. Like it's responding to us specifically."

Merrin stopped mid-step, eyes fixed on the pulsing rune beneath her boots. She gripped her mace tighter, feeling its solid weight as reassurance against the growing unease. The air pressed in around them, thick and suffocating.

"Fuck," she muttered under her breath before raising her voice. "Everyone halt. Jeane's right—something down there is alive and it doesn't want us anywhere near whatever's at the bottom of those stairs." She turned to Halie. "Your holy symbol went dark when we entered this room. Can you sense anything? Any way to ward against whatever's waiting?"

The chamber seemed to hold its breath around them, thick with ancient malice and barely contained hunger.
