The secret chamber deep within the crumbling stone tower (new tunnel discovered with hidden staircase revealed) tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

I step forward, cutting off Merrin’s advance toward that yawning darkness. Stop there! Don't take another step until we know what that stairwell leads to. The central rune beneath his boots pulses with sickly green light—brighter since entering this cursed chamber—and I can feel it pulling at something inside me, something ancient and hungry.

The air feels like an invisible vice squeezing my chest as I stare down into the darkness of the winding staircase. Every instinct screams at me to turn back, but we've come too far. Halie's holy symbol feels cold and unresponsive in my hand, a bad sign if ever there was one. I take a deep breath, the musty air doing little to calm my nerves.

I step closer to the central rune, silver holy symbol held forward like a shield. The air around us tastes wrong—rotten magic and old death. I focus my senses through the symbol. "There's something alive down there," I say quietly. "Not living. Awake." The stone underfoot shifts again, settling with a groan that sounds almost like pain. "I can feel it feeding on the tower's decay."

The central rune pulses brighter, responding to our presence and the spell components we've brought into its domain. Each beat of light feels like teeth gnawing at my concentration. We're standing on top of something massive and malevolent—an ancient trap or a sleeping god, I can't tell which is worse.

I grip my staff tighter, channeling what little magic I have left into a protective ward around the group. This thing wants us to descend. That's reason enough not to trust it. Merrin, Halie—I don't think we should split up, but if someone needs to scout that stairwell first...

The air grows heavier, pressing down with physical force now. The central rune pulses again, and I swear I can hear a low moan echoing from below. Whatever sleeps beneath us is waking up, and it doesn't sound friendly.

I look between my companions—Merrin's barely contained impatience warring with her survival instincts, Halie's unwavering faith clashing with the corruption trying to seep into her soul. We need a plan that doesn't involve throwing ourselves into obvious death traps. Someone speak up before this thing decides we're trespassers and starts the eviction process.

The stone groans again, louder this time. Dust filters down from the ceiling in a slow rain of decay.
