The stone passage revealed itself slowly, inch by agonizing inch, as Merrin pried the hidden mechanism open with careful fingers and a muttered curse. The air that rushed out smelled wrong—old dust and something else, something foul like decay mixed with ozone after lightning strike. The distant sound of crumbling stone grew louder, a hungry groan echoing through the tower's bones.

Merrin stepped inside first, her mace clutched tight in one hand while the other kept the wall steady. The ground underfoot felt... wrong somehow, shifting subtly against her boots like living tissue rather than dead rock. She tested each step before committing weight fully, rogue instincts screaming warnings about what might lie hidden beneath.

The central rune pulsed with sickly green light that bled out across the walls as they watched, illuminating ancient carvings that depicted a long-forgotten civilization's downfall in gruesome detail—figures consumed by shadow, buildings collapsing, skies filled with malevolent eyes. The flickering torchlight made the scenes seem to move, to writhe with barely contained horror.

Jeane followed close behind Merrin, her arcane senses extended like invisible fingers probing the darkness ahead. The air inside this cursed tunnel thickened with ancient death magic that clawed at her insides like talons on raw flesh—she could taste the corruption in it, feel it trying to burrow beneath her skin. The pulsing rune responded to their entry by bleeding its light across the walls, carvings there looking less like warnings and more like invitations to some unholy ceremony.

The wizard Seraphine brought up the rear, her sharp eyes scanning every detail of the newly exposed passage. She felt the magic resistance building as they advanced deeper into the tower—powerful wards or traps likely lay ahead, designed to protect whatever secrets remained hidden within. Her fatigue accumulated with each step, but the thrill of discovery kept her moving forward despite the obvious dangers.

The distant sounds grew louder still—a cascade of falling stone, perhaps, or something far more sinister moving through the tower's depths toward them. Merrin paused at a junction where two passages branched off, one leading steeply downward into darkness, the other winding upward in a tight spiral. Both openings pulsed with that same sickly green light from deeper within.

"What now?" Jeane asked quietly, her arcane senses still extended and twitching with warning. "Split up or stick together? Either way feels like walking into a meat grinder."
