As Merrin steps into the revealed passage, her eyes strain to pierce the darkness, and the green glow emanating from the carvings on the walls casts an eerie light. The ground shudders violently, sending a faint tremor through the party's feet. Halie's holy symbol, once a beacon of warmth, now feels cold and unresponsive against her skin. Suddenly, a section of the wall slides open, revealing a narrow, winding staircase leading down into darkness. The air that wafts up is heavy with the stench of decay and corruption. A faint whispering sound carries on the breeze, sending chills down Merrin's spine. The party's torches flicker wildly, casting eerie shadows on the walls as they gaze into the abyss. The central rune beneath Merrin's boots pulses brighter, its sickly green light illuminating the staircase. A clear choice emerges: do they proceed down the staircase, or explore another path?

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The ground shudders beneath my feet as I take a tentative step into the revealed passage. My grip on the mace tightens, knuckles whitening. The air feels thick and oppressive, like a suffocating blanket pressing down on us. Halie's holy symbol, usually warm against my skin, feels cold and unresponsive. One wrong move could spell our doom. "Stay sharp, everyone," I mutter, my voice barely audible over the distant crumbling of stone. The shadows in this cursed place seem to writhe and twist, as if alive with ancient malice. I strain my eyes, trying to pierce the gloom. The green glow from the central rune bleeds across the walls now, illuminating carvings that look like they could be warning symbols. I don't trust anything in here promising easy answers. The ground shudders again, more violently this time. A wall slides open with a groan, revealing a narrow winding staircase leading down into darkness. The air seems to shimmer with ancient power, and I feel a pull deep within me, like something ancient and hungry is reaching out. We've come too far to turn back now. The Time-Splitting Sword must be close. But this place... it feels wrong. Ancient magic thrums through the very stones, and I fear what horrors might be lurking in the depths.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I test the air again—something foul is definitely building here—and the central rune beneath Merrin's boots pulses with sickly green light. The carvings on the walls have bled out their own glowing patterns now, like veins of poison spreading across stone skin. Halie's holy symbol went cold as proof when we entered this cursed chamber—I felt it too—but now something else shifts in that ancient magic. It's hungry, I realize suddenly. I step forward with my mace ready and arcane symbols already burning on my palms, trying to read the warning signs while my gut twists with apprehension. The air itself feels thick with malevolent intent, like a predator watching from shadows we can't yet see. Whatever this place was built for... it wasn't meant for the living. The walls continue bleeding light as Merrin moves deeper into the passage—each step making those runes pulse brighter—and I call out sharply: "Stop there! Don't take another step until we know what that stairwell leads to." The ground beneath us has been shifting since we entered this damn tunnel, and now a staircase descends into pure darkness? Too obvious. Too convenient. I raise my hand palm-out toward the opening, arcane symbols tracing patterns of detection while I mutter a counter-curse under my breath. The magic pushes back against me—solid resistance—but not immediate lethal force. Whatever's down there wants us to come willingly, it seems. That makes it dangerous in ways I can't yet quantify. "Something's watching," I murmur mostly to myself as I strain to sense whatever's lurking below. "And whatever it is... it knows we're here." The malevolent energy has crystallized into something specific now—ancient death magic, powerful and hungry after centuries of dormancy. If the Time-Splitting Sword is down there, then so is its guardian. I glance back at Halie, who's clutching that useless holy symbol like it might still protect her from what's already inside us all. "Keep that shield ready," I tell her sharply. "And stay close to Varrika—her armor might be the only thing keeping this curse from spreading further." Then to Merrin: "Don't touch anything down there until we've scouted it properly."

My mind races through options while my body remains still, listening for movement below and tasting the magic on my tongue. We can descend cautiously with Merrin in front as our scout—she's got that keen eye for traps—but that leaves us vulnerable to whatever might be lying in wait at the bottom. Or we can search the surrounding walls more thoroughly first, mapping out every inch before committing to those stairs. Either way, time is running out. The tower groans overhead like a dying beast, and I'd bet my wings the collapse isn't natural—it's being accelerated by whatever's down there, wanting us closer. Wanting us within reach of that sword and its curse.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's eyes dart from the pulsing rune at her feet to the ominous staircase before her. She tightens her grip on the mace, feeling its weight as a solid anchor in this unnerving atmosphere. The air seems to thicken with each passing moment, pressing down on them like an invisible vice. "Alright, you heard Jeane. No one takes another step until we know what's waiting for us down there," Merrin says, her voice tight with tension. "Halie, can you sense anything from your holy symbol? Any wards or traps we should be wary of?"

She turns to Varrika, her expression a stew of caution and impatience. "And you - I know that sword is calling your name, but we need to do this smart. No rushing in."

Merrin's mind races as she tries to puzzle out their next move. Every instinct is screaming at her to be careful, but the pull of whatever power lies below is almost magnetic. She takes a deep breath, steeling herself. "Okay, here's what we're going to do..."
