The descent rope groaned ominously, and the air inside the chamber thickened dramatically with each pulse of the central rune's sickly light. The stench of decay and corruption grew stronger, carried on a thin stream of acrid gas rising from the depths of the pit below. Halie's torch flickered wildly, casting mad shadows across the walls as she hissed a warning to Merrin.

"Wait," Jeane breathed, her crimson eyes fixed on the pulsing rune. "I can feel it—something ancient and wrong is breathing through this place, using those channels like lungs. The runes aren't resisting our entry—they're awakening something." Her wings tightened instinctively against her back.

Seraphine watched with growing dread as Merrin carefully secured himself on the rope. The air around them seemed to shimmer with an oily, iridescent sheen, and every pulse of the central rune sent a fresh wave of malevolent energy washing over them. She recognized that scent all too well—the same corruption she'd encountered in her studies of forbidden tomes.

"Stop," Seraphine called out sharply, her voice echoing in the confined space. "The air itself is poisonous now, carrying traces of necrotic energy. Proceed with extreme caution—we don't know what else might be awakening down there." She began muttering under her breath, casting a subtle magical shield to protect herself.

Varrika's hand tightened around her mace, knuckles whitening as she felt the wrongness of the place seep into her bones. The stone walls themselves seemed to exhale ancient death with each pulse of that damned rune. She moved closer to Merrin, ready to catch him if the rope gave way.

"Hear me, Merrin," Varrika growled, her voice low and urgent. "This feels wrong in my gut—worse than any battlefield I've known. Whatever's down there, it ain't natural. Be quick about your descent, but don't be a fool. We're all that stands between you and whatever lies below." The dwarf woman's scarred face was set in a grim mask of determination.

The rope creaked again, and Merrin began his careful descent into the yawning darkness below. Each pulse of the central rune seemed to draw him deeper into the tower's hungry embrace, and the air grew heavier with each passing moment.
